Yes, it's that same old story. After a two week lay off at W6R2, I repeated W1R1 just to see how things went, and, well, it went again. A different calf muscle this time, same leg though. Another lay-off calls. Fortunately this time my cycling muscles aren't affected so I can keep the cardio going. It's very frustrating. Maybe I need a longer period of strength work and stretches before I return to running. My previously injured calf was back on a par with the uninjured one before I set off, so who knows?
Another calf injury: Yes, it's that same old... - Couch to 5K
Another calf injury
Too much, too soon... maybe? You do need to give things time and some building back time too?
Those legs need some looking after, despite your cycling and it sounds as if you need to be a tad kinder to yourself?
The calf muscle needs the time to heal and then needs exercise support to strengthen it.
Maybe also, if this has happened with the same leg, then it is time to visit an expert, your GP or a sports physio. to see what is going on ?
Ease off a tad until then ?
Thanks, yes maybe I was a bit too anxious to restart. I'll concentrate on the bike for now
Okay, .but do, please be aware that although different muscles are used.. cycling may impact those muscles if they are damaged. Seeing an expert, could well be your starting point?
I had a calf injury and even though I thought I had done everything correctly, and given time and exercise to healing, I went out and it recurred.. Seeing a Sports Physio' got me running again, but only after a few weeks of no running.
If you keep getting similar problems and rest alone isn't sorting them out you really do need to take proper medical advice. Make an appointment with your GP and take your running shoes along (sometimes they may be the cause of the problem). Explain the history and the steps you've taken to attempt to recover.
If you don't you're taking the risk that whatever is causing the problem will just keep recurring. Often, a doctor can suggest something that sorts you out within days when you've suffered for months.
I am speaking from bitter experience, I was unable to get to a doctor for five months while travelling and at times could barely walk from a running injury. Within a week of seeing the doctor I was back to full fitness. Don't make my mistake.
It is possible that focussing on cycling instead isn't the best way to deal with a calf injury. It may be fine, but I'd agree with the suggestions to seek professional examination and opinion.
One thing I have found helps is to keep the calves warm (and therefore covered) and to balance the warm up walk - not too fast.
I agree with the above. See a medical professional, GP or Physio or both to help understand what's happening and how to prevent it in future.
All best...
