First run after graduating

I’ve planned to use Beyond C25K but I thought I would have a single run before starting. First thing I noticed was how much I missed Sanjeev and his encouraging voice along the way but it was good in a way just to run and finish when I couldn’t do any more, second thing I noticed at the end after checking Map my run was how incredibly slow I am. 38 minutes to run 4.6 K!

Hopefully beyond C25K can help with that.

What a great run to start your post C25K adventure!

It's liberating to run without being told what to do, and you learn a lot about how far and how fast is enjoyable.

Right now there is no need to try and run fast. You're better off establishing good habits and running regularly. Slower runs are more enjoyable and you have more energy left at the end. Speed can come later, once you've built fitness and stamina.

You may have heard of the Nike Running Club app. It's free and you don't need to buy Nike stuff to use it. It has hundreds of different guided runs if you like having someone in your ear. I (and many others) have found it really useful as a tool to learn about running techniques and about the mental aspects of running which are as important as the physical side.

Also, have you had a look at the Bridge to 10k forum? healthunlocked.com/bridgeto10k It's very useful if you want to chat to people who have moved beyond C25K and are looking to increase the speed/time for which they can run. The people there are just as lovely as here, well worth a look!

Well done. Not to worry about running fast, that will come with consistent running.

Better to be slow and steady...

Hi Syd. I find we are much aligned. I’m just behind you with my progress. I will be running without a mentor for the first time later today. I plan to do three or four consolidation runs before moving on to a new challenge. We’re about the same pace by the sounds of it. I’m not concerned with speed to be honest. The last thing I want is to get an injury having come this far. So I’m going to stay with the tried and trusted.

Hi Baggie

Yes it sounds like we are on the same type of jouney at the same time. I think you are right about the consolidation runs and preventing injuries as well, yesterday I was trying to run 5k and wasnt thinking about the time, I ended up running for 8 minutes longer than I'd done before without realising and I woke up this morning with sore legs and back.

I have a similar situation. Next Saturday is my local parkrun Xmas run. I am only running 30 mins at the moment and that equates to 4K. I’m not quite ready to run 5 k. I’m confident I can do it if I stick to my pace. I’m going to run 35 minutes later and see how that goes.

Remember, Parkrun isn't a race. Nobody's 'timing' you in a judgmental way (although they give you a time if you show them your barcode), it truly is about taking part.

No reason why you shouldn't run for 30 minutes and walk the rest. Or start your Parkrun with your warm up walk, run for 30 minutes and walk the rest as a cooldown. Or alternate running and walking. Some people walk the whole thing. It's totally up to you.

Just don't make the mistake I did on my first Parkrun, get absolutely carried away, damage a tendon and not be able to run for 6 weeks! You have been warned 😂

You’re absolutely right. That’s sound advice. I ran 35 yesterday and that was ok. Aching a bit today but no issues. I’m going to rest now and do the park run on Saturday. Cheers. 👍
