Wk 6 run 2 - I can’t get past it

Having completed Wk 5 runs - including the 20 mins of Wk 5, I was eager to get Wk 6 under my belt. But, I have had a muscle strain every time I try to run for 10 - 12 minutes. It is at the bottom of my lower leg above the ankle but not the calf muscle.

I am totally perplexed as it seems to happen around the 10 min mark and it has been my left leg for 3 times, but the right leg decided to have a turn as well - same muscle, different leg. I am giving myself a good rest when I get the strain and when I next run it is wk 6 run one, or wk 5 runs 1 and 2. But, as soon as I get to a longer run, the muscle pings again.

Any advice would be gratefully received as I just cannot seem to get past wk 6 run 2 and it’s not for want of trying!! Cheers

How frustrating for you! Sending sympathy your way!

What would I do in your position? See a physio who works with runners for some expert advice. If you can run for twenty minutes, running for 10 shouldn’t cause you a problem. It’s worth getting a professional involved because they can give you tailored exercises and stretches to target whatever’s going on, and most importantly, some reassurance that you can get past this. Most of us have niggles and injuries along the way and we just get stronger and become better runners because of them. There are very few things that stop people running for good and this (in my very non expert opinion!) doesn’t sound like one of them

Good luck getting to the bottom of what’s going on!

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Yes, it is an odd one that I could run for 20 mins at the end of wk 5, but cannot now get through the 2 x 10 mins in wk 6 run 2. I don’t think I have changed my technique and I am running in the same place and at the same pace. It’s always the second lot of the 10 mins that gets me - which, again, is a bit strange.

It’s frustrating, but that’s all it is. I will find a way past it. Thank-you!

It sounds like a tibialis issue. BUT I say that only because I had a similar thing.I sought professional advice through my Sports Physio .I am not a medical expert so maybe at this stage you should seek some expert advice?

Echoing MissUnderstanding and Oldfloss , you need proper advice about this. You only find out how hugely complicated your lower limbs are when you start running and there is no substitute for expert, personalised advice when something hurts.

Some GP surgeries have their own physio so you may be able to access the help you need for free. I suggest you take your running shoes with you. On my first running related visit to the physio he took one look, bent my shoes in half and told me that they'd had it and I needed new ones. This was a great incentive to do the prescribed exercises and get running again, who doesn't love new shoes? (as far as I'm concerned physios are magicians, they can give you simple fixes to painful problems)

Welcome to the wonderful world of being a runner :)

Do you consider yourself to be 'running' or 'jogging' ?

How old are you?

What shoes are you wearing? How old are they?
