End of running

After completing 6 weeks of the program I had to permanently hang up my running shoes. I have a long standing issue with sacro-iliac pain which running has exacerbated. I am gutted because I love running but the pain and restricted mobility is debilitating so very reluctantly I am giving it up. I have loved being part of this community & highly recommend the program, it gave me the confidence to run when I always believed I couldn’t. Good luck to everyone currently on their way to graduation xx

I’m so sorry to hear that, and I completely understand. After a year of running 5K’s for the first time, I began having pain in my legs and back, and discovered the impact from running, due to having idiopathic Scoliosis, was causing problems. So now it’s back to just walking, and giving up goals of improving running time. I’m grateful for the fun I had, and for at least being able to walk. God bless you! 🙏🏻☺️

Oh dear. I am so sad to read this. I remember so well when, way back, you and your daughter began to run.. and the joy you took from those runs. Then the dreadful loss of your girl, which broke your heart. Yet, you returned, determined to capture a little of the running joy.

I hope that your pain eases and that you might find something that will not exacerbate it, but allow you to get outside and exercise.

Just a thought... I never give up, do ? Does walking cause the same problems...I am just wondering if Active 10 would be an idea. It is a lovely friendly place, just like this, and so many interesting ideas going on there?

Hello Floss, I have put my sports masseur head on & I think my issue is a tight psoas muscle so I am going to go see my osteopath to see if it helps. In the meantime, I am trying hip flexor & psoas muscle stretches, both which have relieved it a little. Fingers crossed it is the psoas x

I'm sorry to hear that - it's always a bit sad to read posts like this.

I hope you can find another form of exercise that works for you.

Good luck and take care!

Thanks John, I am walking & just started doing Tai Chi again to keep myself moving

Great that you have another option to keep moving.

Worth finding a good physio maybe too who can help...

Wish you all the best.

Take care, stay safe & God bless.

Hi Dhiney

Just to say, if you find Tai Chi a bit tricky remembering the long routines (I did!!) - Qigong is from the same base but consists of single forms that you can put together into a session rather than a long set routine. I have found it to be amazing at keeping my body mobile and staving off arthritis and I like the option to be able to chose the forms I do each time to make up a daily practise. You can do it alongside Tai Chi as they complement each other, but it might be worth looking into it. All the best 😊

Oh no! I really feel for you. I had some metatarsal issues 2 years ago and I was fearful that running was just not in my future. But I did manage and am still running.

But just posting you the links to two of our sister forums, where many of our community members mingle as well, just in case this is of help:

Our Sister Forums:

★★★ Strength and Flexibility Forum :  S&F is all about our needs as runners and walkers, or generally needing a bit more strength and flexibility-related workouts in your life. It includes a NHS-associated five-week programme delivered through a series of podcasts.

★★★ Active10 : Active10 is for those who want to include regular walking into their daily lives, with a dedicated walking app for iOS and Android.

So sorry to hear this Dhiney, I also remember the enjoyment you and your daughter felt running together, you must miss her so much.

It is a shame that you are unable to continue with your comeback to running, I hope you are able to find an alternative way to exercise that is more comfortable and beneficial. Maybe pilates or yoga might be ok.

Take care.

I ran for just over the year through the programme and like you I loved it and for similar reasons had to stop. But doing it is a wonderful feeling isn’t it 😊

Yes, I absolutely loved running & the feeling after the run. I’ll be doing some form of exercise, just not anything that jiggles the SI joints 😀

have you had any physio for the sacro iliac issue? I had a 15+ year issue which the nhs seemed unable to do anything about. I was recommended a hands-on physio and the problem was sorted in three sessions. I have only had one minor recurrence in 20 years. Maybe your issue is more severe than mine but if you love running it may be worth investigation?

I have an excellent osteopath so I am going to make an appointment to see him.

I am so sorry to hear this. It is awful to feel that a door has closed for good. I have not run for a few months for a variety of reasons, but still I hope to start the C25k programme again this year. Hopefully this is not the end of running for you if you can find something that works. I do tai chi and find it wonderful for movement.

So sorry to hear that. Do you know what is causing it? I get a lot of pain there too. Please visit actonaxialspa.com/symptoms-... if you think it would be useful. With medication, I can run. Without it I can barely walk, and even sitting hurts!Best of luck, whatever you decide to do next.
