So, this week I was determined to fit in 3 x 30 minute runs minimum.
Monday. ✅ Lovely run of 4K enjoyed. In the bag.
Wednesday.... didn't get out, weather shocking and work was full on, so I went Thursday.
Thursday ✅ Got myself out. Ran 4.5k but it was a bit of a toughy... for the first 15 minutes it was like wading through treacle and honestly could of stopped at 10 minutes, but I drove through it.
Friday comes around.... keep getting little shooting pains from my left knee... oh noooo. Not again. Saying that, I entered the BTR Liverpool Santa Dash.... all going to be done remotely but sounds like a bit of fun and we get a 🥇😊😊 and I ordered a blue Santa Suit 🎅.
Saturday.... running feels like a no go.... the knee starts to ache and the muscles around it., but no worries, there's still Sunday to go out to complete my challenge to myself this week.
Sunday... still lying in bed (must of needed the mammoth sleep 💤) and @Tinytears60 says I should stay off it fir a couple of days. It still doesn't feel right....I can't figure out what movement makes the shooting pain (it seems like it is when I try to lift the weight of my calf and foot at the knee, it "goes".
I think TT is probably right, or is it one of those niggles that we can run through and it goes away. Will ibuprofen and knee support get me through??? Is it worth it??

I don't know why we get the niggles but I take them now as a warning , personally I don't feel there is anything to gain by trying to run through them .
I am also finding that my knees ache after doing 10K.
So I'm certainly not going to rush increasing that distance
Just something to consider... my knees were aching after running 10k.. I discovered my shoes were too small for running in. As our feet swell from running longer distances it can affect our knees... my new shoes are 1.5 - 2 sizes bigger than my "normal" everyday shoes... not had a knee issue since getting them
Thanks , however I do not think my shoes are the problem, I have 2 pairs , one road and one trail pair, my road shoes are fine and my trail shoes that I wore on Saturday are actually bigger !
I do however have slight arthritis in my knees which I think is the reason in my case and also the fact it was my first time off road
Hi Plattszo, take TT60's advice and take a few extra days off running, no point on running with any pain or injury, hopefully it won't last too long, you can look forward to that virtual Santa Dash in December 🎄 🎅., keep safe and take care of yourself.
Thanks to you all for letting me off. I get so cross with myself when thing don't go to plan... but I realise I'm just putting myself under pressure and feel like I set myself up for this disappointment ALL THE TIME.
Hi Plattzo 👋 I’d go with InspirationalTinyTears60 advice and give your knee a few days rest! Knee niggles are tricky and it can be hard to identify the source. My first area to eliminate would be my quads - specifically the iliotibial band (IT band) which runs along the outside of your leg from the hip to the knee and shinbone. If it’s tight it may be causing nagging knee pain on the outside of the knee. A foam roller and YouTube videos are your friends here!
You have shooting pains in your knee (again)? That means something is definitely not right and you are risking an injury. Knee issues will not be sorted here (we are supporters, not specialists in knee injuries), or YouTube, or (god forbid) Google and Wikipedia. What you need is a professional (physio or osteopath) who will identify the issue, possibly identify the cause and recommend the therapy. In the meantime I wouldn't run if any pain is felt anywhere around the knee.
I can’t help but feel your response is a little swipe at my advice 🤔 Of course, it goes without saying to see a physio. However, a foam roller and a YouTube video guidance video for IT band massage won’t result in an A&E visit. It may be just the trick to release tight quads which may (or may not) be the problem. It’s all trial and error and may save some pennies 💰
No, that's not my intention at all. I was replying to the original sender and haven't read your post until now. Apologies if it came across differently.
I also had shooting pains in my knee some years ago and delayed a visit to a physio whilst relying on online help and guidance. The resulting knee inflammation aggravated the existing injury and what could've been a few visits to a physio ended up as months of therapy. I didn't run for over three months and then it took time to get back to a previous level. And, of course, the cost was ludicrous. Hence my post.
Hi Plattszo sorry to hear about the knee pain but please take the advice of those lovely people above and look after yourself 👏👏👏 Couple of days soon pass 🤞🤞🤞
If possible I would see a sports physio. The knees are such complex structures it's impossible to identify the cause by reading and Googling.
Almost certainly a sports physio will diagnose, and offer a solution. It's worth it. I kept resting and trying out my knee. In the end I admitted defeat and saw the physio, I think I wasted 4 weeks faffing and hoping.
Definitely rest for a few days and seek advice. It may be something which can be sorted out by some targeted exercises quite quickly, but not if you embed the problem by pushing yourself. Do try to go easy on the ibuprofen - it isn't a mild drug and won't be the final solution. Maybe ice would help until you get some advice? You can get on-line appointments with s physio, that worked for me! Good luck!
Hi everyone, wanted to let you all know I have stayed off the running for a week now and not thinking about any pain in the knee day to day... so the aim is to give it a gentle try tomorrow... somewhere flat. 30 mins only. No breaking any records. Will see how I go. 😊😊
