CATCH-up CORNER... September... Week 2... What the mind believes...

Good Morning everyone :)

Here I am, the Corner door is open and there is a warm welcome waiting for everyone.

Smoothies are ready, as is the coffee and this week, a lovely selection of teas ! Fresh croissants and some rather tasty muffins , just help yourself.

Grab a snack, find a cushion and just rest awhile.

It has been, for many of us, an interesting week weather wise; a bit of everything. We have had wind, and rain, heat and humidity... and a spell of chilly, for good measure.

This morning, here, grey skies and torrential rain.... I feel my Sunday fun-day, run day is on hold.

For me, I am able to put my run aside...I have the choice, but for many of us, working and with terrifically busy lifestyles, getting the runs in is hugely important and not getting the run done can prey on the mind.

That got me thinking... again! Oh blimey!

Reading your posts this last week, I have, as ever, been inspired by your running posts.

Forum friends on all stages of their running; Newbies, just beginning the programme, folk well on the way, folk just running that last kilometer towards the finish line and the Graduation podium. There is too, as usual , a fair few returners.. some, who have had to stop running through injury, but some too, who have found the whole thing tricky, mainly because of what was going on, in their head!

There is much said about running, and the way we do it. Loads of advice for our running body, but maybe a little less obvious, advice for our mindset.

Okay... scrolling around and reading up a bit, I found much food for thought.

So... how?

Well, to get into the mind set for running, there appears to be a few common denominators, and the same words, crop up over and over again.

Achievable: targets, goals, finish lines

Confidence: Knowing we will succeed, trusting the plan.

Positivity: Self talk, mantras, and a clear view of where we are going.

Self Care: Exercise routines, simple and easy to maintain, breathing techniques, warm up and cool down, stretches and strength and stamina work,

Importantly too:

Enjoyment. Doing it for pleasure.

I could break all these points down, but it would take a while! Some are self explanatory...easy to understand but not always easy to do.

There is a well known saying...“One of the beautiful things about running is that it is direct and elegant. The formula is simple: put one foot in front of the other.

Bernd Heinrich.

Oh gosh... if it was, truly, only that easy!

Maybe then, take a look around, read other folks posts on the forums, link on to those posts about mind sets and running. Look at some of the mantras other folk employ... mine is infamous on the forums, slow and steady, and I do not always use it just for running!

Maybe if you don't have one... find one ... one that works for you...

I feel too, that for me as I have read around, some of the most meaningful advice, is that of visualisation; everything you have done so far, all you have achieved, and, (not just in running), that you WILL do this...and you will succeed.

Also, and this again, is a pet comment of mine. Enjoy. If you are not enjoying, everything is going to feel so, so much harder... really, it is.

Enjoyment, not endurance, pain not pleasure, delight and not dread.

Gosh, I have used a whole load of my favourite quotes today! I only need this one to round it, all up...

“" Believe You Can and You're Halfway There." - Theodore Roosevelt I will leave you with one last thought...

Simple, maybe not. True? Absolutely !

Okay... people. Your turn now... what is going on in your head? ( Sensible answers only, I feel I may be the only one with weird thoughts).

What, currently, is your mind set in your running?.

Calmness, confidence or chaos?

Are you looking forward to your runs, or just wanting to do them and get them over with? Have you got a mantra, if so, how and when do you use it?

I cannot wait to see who pops in and I know that I, and others will be really interested in your replies... I will leave you with one last quotation, that we see many times, not sure of its actual origination but,

“Physical Strength will get you to the start line, but mental strength will get you to the finish line.”

That is a good one !

Oldfloss x

PS

My mind set currently.... honestly? Well it is not brilliant... but I am working on that.. and more importantly, hard though it may be, I do KNOW that I will get back to where I wish to be x

🍏 oh if I had lost my mojo then I would be back with a bang looking at this wonderful photo!!!! It beckons me in to run up up and away…albeit carefully over that terrain! I love it!! Thanks for a great post Oldfloss!!

Hooray.....that mojo would quake in its boots!Yes..i think I ran up there...once!

Treading carefully is a good thing...and not just walking or running ! Listening to what is going on with our body, taking nite of it and acting on it.

Our best guide, although sometimes we don't realise it.

You will be back on track ...slow and steady, but in the meantime, you can keep me company here in the Corner.

Watching and listening to the rain...it is not unpleasant x

Thank you for calling in today x

Being a multiple returner, with age comes wisdom. I am older, my joints are creakier, my knees need careful treatment. This time round my mantra has been 'slow slow steady pace' and saying it in my head as I go, rather than getting carried away by the beat of the music and going too fast.

I loved running to my favourite rock tracks but now I'm saving those for later, as a special treat, for when I've graduated the second time. I'm on to week 6 so not long now.

I also think of Ianodatruffe who helped me in the very beginning 🏃‍♀️🙂

Listening to our body and hearing what it says.

Our runs, our way and having the confidence to do that!

You are doing wonderfully and thank you so much for popping in to share.

Lovely post and photo!

My mindset in my running right now is.. well.. maybe one day I will get back to it! I walk almost every day, usually 3 or 4k, as having a dog makes that a given, but the new prosthetic leg is still not quite right for running, at least not in warmer weather. I’m not sufficiently focussed on running to put up with discomfort or pain, or to go through the hassle of more long distance visits to the prosthetic centre, so I’m doing other forms of exercise for now, as well as trying to focus on the joy.. Like you, I’ve been struggling a bit.. busy summer with kids, grandkids, health worries and bugs including Covid again.. etc.. Also possibly like you.. ? as you were in B&Q.. I’m on with some house renovations.. I’m painting today.. any activity helps to keep the anti-joy gremlins at bay! You are doing great at providing encouragement here on the forum.. I hope your self-care will keep you running strong..🤗x

Hello... Welcome, welcome ! Take a seat!

I was thinking of you when I wrote this and especially, when I wrote the post this week, on Catch Up Corner .. all about walking...and I know your walking is taking centre stage currently...but I also know that you would love to get back to your running, at some point!

Not Covid again... so many folk getting it again... and a lot of residual tiredness, afterwards too! Oh goodness.

You have been struggling like me, yes... busy days, oh so busy, and so many appointments for Mr OF and battles to be fought with the devil that is , his dementia...we have decided to call it, Fred! B and Q.. yes. a new fire ! Winter beckons!

I have painted, all afternoon...watercolour... finishing off some things we started at a Workshop my Art teacher ran on Saturday... all about backgrounds!

It is great... and you are so, so right... painting is all consuming...no room for anything else... other than the painting! It must be, if you are like me,,, an absolute joy. To escape the worry and the pain you have gone through with your prosthetic leg.

You know how much you have inspired me... and motivated me...I am in awe of your strength and determination... it makes me feel stronger... !

Might you have time, maybe, to post a reply to Changing Room Chat this week, I feel our forum friends there, would find it so useful...

Thank you so much for this... and for popping on today; our friends here need to read and take away from your reply, that despite struggles, and illness and worries, we are still able if we try, "...to focus on the joy."

Please... call in and do post , anywhere you fancy, if you have the urge. It is good to know that you are here with us xxx

I can only imagine how sad it must be for you to deal with Mr O-F and Fred.. an ongoing grief and struggle.. I’m glad you are managing to stay strong and find relief and joy in creative activities. Watercolour painting I would love to try! But I meant the other kind of painting.. I’ve emulsioned the walls of our utility room this week, and also papered the wall over the fireplace.. on my own, so I’m feeling quite pleased with myself..😊

OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to PeggySusi

That is lovely...and in the house where our daughter now , we have those very tiles around the fireplace, in the dining room! Your room looks beautiful! Well done you!

It is hard and when appointments as yesterday afternoon's did... go pear shaped, even harder... the explanations needed to someone who is already stressed are tricky! x

PeggySusi profile image
PeggySusiGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Thank you.. we were very lucky to get the fireplace and tiles.. not original to the house, as sadly all the old Victorian fireplaces had gone when we moved in.. but my friend who lives round the corner found the cast iron part and tiles rusting in her garden shed and gave them to us!

Hospital appointments are always stressful and I often think just as hard for anyone caring or supporting as they are for the patient.. Hope you are both feeling better about things today 🤗x

We are tired...but okay... and I ran 10K this morning... so that relaxed my head a lot... but tried my body!

Stroke of luck on your fireplace !

Wow 10k well done..! I’m tired today after only a 4.5k walk (in the rain!).. glad you’re relaxed after your run.. hopefully you will sleep well tonight..🤞

hi Oldfloss thanks for a great post as always.

My mindset? Well I’m in Cornwall again, and I know I said I’d never do the Tamar Trails Parkrun again after my first attempt a year ago (they have a fiendishly steep hill not far from the end) I only went and did it again! Not going to beat me, I thought, so I may have walked up the hill again, but I did, just, beat my previous time! And I felt a terrific sense of achievement.

So tomorrow I shall run around the village where we stay, and although I know it is quite hilly, I shall not let it beat me! I can do hills, slow and steady.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to BarbieW

Oh my goodness... welcome and WELL done!!!

Blimey ! Walking up the hill, why not, you did it and beat your other time! Cornish air and you taking advantage of it... wonderful ! I should think that your mind set is absolutely, buzzing!

Your holiday location sounds to be just perfect and if you know the area...you know exactly where to run!

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us and taking time out on your holiday. Grab another cool drink and enjoy the rest of your time there... xxx

Thanks for the reminder about mindset. Returner after injury here and finding it frustrating at times but accepting that running twice a week is better often than 3 for me at the moment. W4R1 done.
