How far back to start?

alicemaryflorence profile image

I did the first run of week 9 the week before lock down started, so, about 3 months with no running I think. I feel like I'm ready to start running again but where would you recommend I restart? I'm a healthy weight 37 year old and I'd managed the first 8 weeks with no repeats. Thanks in advance.

Why not go for 20 minute run as a goal first and then build up from there? You could see if you can keep going as there’s weeks for 25mins, then 28, then finally 30.

Welcome back. According to this article runnersworld.com/beginner/a... you’re on the high end of the 30days to 3 months out group... and thus should look to come back at 50% of your pre break running. So, if we go by that your three runs would average 15 minutes for your comeback. So, possibly W5r3 at 20 minutes and then those week 6 intervals again? It’s hard to tell exactly as we are all a little different... go run with no expectations and see how you get on... nice and easy does it.

All any of us can do after a lay off is to go out and see what we can comfortably manage, then build back up gently, using C25k or something similar as a guide to weekly increase.

Always better to err on the side of caution.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I went back to week 5 run 1 and found it quite easy but was absolutely delighted to actually be out running again so I think that was the right place to start. Had I gone to full runs in week 7, I might not have managed it and felt disappointed. So, that's me, I'm a runner again!

Week 6 Run 2, is the one I used to get me back into this when I was forced to take a break from it, that one gives you two 10 min runs with short break in between...Good Luck whatever you decide to do 👍
