Week 3 Run 1

I didn't know if my legs would take this run this morning, we went on another family bike ride yesterday, last week's was 6.35 miles, this weeks was only 2 miles longer.

Let me state for the record here, yes I am looking at what routes I can make up on the Garmin Connect website but I am not the one who decides which route we take.

I must admit, I don't get to cycle at a constant speed, I'm backwards and forwards making sure the 2 eldest GK's don't go off too far on their own and at times there are challenges I want to do, like pedalling up a certain hill without stopping, etc.

Anyway, running forum, sorry, given my legs were still slightly achy from yesterday I decided on a slightly slower pace, ok I tried the first 90 seconds at 7 kph but my legs were close on refusing to move, so the other 3 runs were all done at 6.5 kph. I'm not fast, I've never claimed to be, my best recorded 5k is 42 minutes.

At times my legs still seemed to baulk at the request to run but I concentrated on my breathing and tried to maximise the efficiency of my running, which is just a posh way of saying I was trying to make sure I didn't start dragging my feet or stomping on the treadmill.

I could have just taken some of the incline off and do it on a flat surface but that really wouldn't have helped in the long run, no pun intended there.

I did a week of Week 3 runs in April as a fitness tester and just to start getting back into it and today's run was further with a lower average heart rate.

My diet is still kind of all over, it's no where near as strict as last year's, I've gained a couple of pounds, that could be water as I'm drinking a lot with both the running and cycling but since both of my chosen activities use the legs I wouldn't be surprised if that starts to be a factor shortly.

Solo bike ride tomorrow, same route as yesterday, with run 2 on Wednesday. My solo rides are in the mornings, pre-work so I have longer to recover so I should be ok.

While I love the cycling, it's still not the same as the running, running is me time.

Happy running everyone.

Sounds good! I don't usually find my cycling affects my running except the one time I thought I'd try a duathlon on my own, not an event (just sprint distance). The effect on my legs for the first km of the second run was comical! Talk about jelly legs 😄. Great combo though, running and riding 😊

Yeah, it is strange, I've just done the same route, plus another half mile or so and my legs don't feel as bad as they did after the ride on Sunday.

I normally have a protein shake after a ride/long run to help with any aches, etc, I didn't have one on Sunday but we'll see how tomorrow's run goes.

My local ParkRun course is actually on the route I've been doing, it's been very tempting to park the bike up, do a lap of the pond, about a mile and then jump back on the bike, thing is, most of the way home is up hill and that may cause 'issues' ;)

Once the local gym opens again I'll be throwing swimming and weights in there too but I think cycling and running will be staying.

I did mine from home - three loops out and back, then I had no issue locking up the bike 😊

The bike I'm using has a lot of sentimental value to me, in 2010 a cousin of mine died, he was 11 months younger than me. I kind of inherited the bikes he had. I obviously had the intention of riding one of them but never did, over the last year I have rebuilt his main bike, I nearly scrapped it several times but persevered and about 2 months ago I finally got it finished. I could have bought one maybe two new bikes on what I spent (learning as I went with YouTube and a friend at work).

I couldn't not lock the bike up, even though there is no one around most morning when I've been out riding. I don't want to sound flippant, the money I've spent on the bike getting it going again means nothing, the bike was going back on the road AND I was going to use it no matter what it cost.

Seeing some scrote riding off on it from across the pond, knowing it's gone because I didn't lock it up, would kill me I think.

I may do it on one of the family rides, take a picnic, leave the bike with Mrs LeeU and take the grandkids for a run round the pond.
