.... specifically the one I run along! Been beavering away at Week 5, did the Run 3 on Sunday and was really pleased - I completed the full 20 minutes and still felt like there was a little bit in the tank. Half term has got in the way somewhat, but hey ho, got out this morning to do week 6 run 1 - as it's daylight, I went back down to my beloved canal.... lovely. The trees changing colour, the calm, the fact that I was able to catch and overtake a narrowboat. The only problem is I feel like stopping to take photos..... Felt a bit iffy partway through the second run, but it passed, and I'm well on the way to finishing my last run with a brisk five minute walk to home.
And then....
The Drawbridge. Yes, there's a drawbridge that's part of my route. As I approach, I see it's up; as I get closer, with a sinking feeling I realise that it's a solo operator who seems to be rather nervous... three minutes running left, but arrghhh! He's PULLING THE BOAT THROUGH BY HAND!!!!
I circle along the towpath (there is no alternate route at this point, the next nearest crossings are half a mile away), looping round, and then finally he's finished and lowers the drawbridge. By this point Laura's told me to slow down to a walk, and I am now four minutes brisk walk left - but then the same again to get home.
The man on the boat apologetically says something about being a solo operator, i reply politely enough - but deep down I'm thinking, "Ha! I hope there's no-one to help you when you get to the Staircase Locks in a couple of miles!"
Advice on how to cross a canal without the use of a bridge welcome!
