I am just back from my first (possibly ever) 28 minute run, and it wasn’t all plain sailing.
Within 5 mins of starting to run, I had to jump off of the tarmac path to avoid an oncoming tractor 🚜 , and on to the extremely boggy and muddy grass.
Do I care about getting my lovely trainers all muddy ? No.
After another few minutes, there was no way to avoid running a few steps through a pool of water kindly left by Dennis. So my muddy trainers became soaking wet muddy trainers.
Do I care about that ?
No.
My pace today was a lot slower than last Friday .... 6.13 per km then, and 6.28 per km today.
Do I care about that ?
No.
Today’s route was more hilly than last Friday, and the weather was much more windy (in my weak defence🤣).
Did I complete the run for the full 28 mins ?
Yes.
Do I care about that ?
Hell, YES. That’s the most important thing at this stage. Today’s run wasn’t the best, at some stages I found it a bit tough but getting through it is the most important thing
I’m beginning to learn slowly that some runs are not as good as others, but it’s all experience and more km under the belt
Am I buzzing now ?
Yes.
Have I attached a dodgy photo of my soaking muddy trainers ?
Yes.
Happy running all 🏃♂️ 🏃♀️

Great post Martin and spoken like a true runner! I completed Couchto5k over four years ago now and have since gone on to run various distances (10k, 10 miles and HM). I ran my SLOWEST 😱 10k a couple of weeks ago ..mud, trails, hills, more mud...and yet it was one of the best because of all those things! Running trails and through lots of mud is great for increasing strength - as long as you manage to stay upright (which I confess, I don't always manage to do!). Makes you faster in the long run too!😉 Good luck🙂
Thanks very much Sandra for your great post and words of encouragement.
Yes you’re right, there is something quite satisfying about finishing a run against the mud, hills, rain and wind.
It means a lot to have so much support on here, from people who are going through C25K now with me and equally from people like you who have moved on and up. Thank you 🙏.
Haha, love this post MartinKH , I hated mud and rain and puddles and just generally rubbish weather but now, since my running life began, they are an important and really enjoyable part of my runs...I have embraced it just like you!!! And so you should be buzzing, 28 minutes is ages!!!! And all the things we get on our trainers tell a wonderful story, just like yours. Well done 😉
Just completed W7D2, so 25 minutes and it was tough! I felt like stopping many times, but did I keep going? Yes! I am lucky to have access to an indoor track, so I can keep my shoes nice and white! Lol. Thanks for sharing! Great work!
