Still stuck on the Injury Couch, waiting for my hip to settle down, feeling very grumpy about having to miss Parkrun today. Anyway, this cheered me up - 96 year old sets new 5k record for his age group! 42 minutes! I love the idea that I might still be running well into old age and he's so modest about his achievement too! 😂
Bit of inspiration! : Still stuck on the Injury... - Couch to 5K
Bit of inspiration!
Thanks, Debs. That’s a great story. Agree that it’s inspiring. Are you any closer to getting back out there?
I know, he's amazing! As for me, it's definitely easing up but still not right. I went swimming with the kids earlier and that felt great. I know I have previously rushed back to running too soon so I'm going to be really sensible and give it more time. My alarm went off at 7.30am this morning because I forgot to switch it off and I felt a real pang of sadness that I wasn't leaping out of bed to go to Parkrun! Ridiculous! 😂 Not sure quite what has happened to me...
I know what you mean. It was horrible not to run it today. Really felt I had missed out. Great that you are swimming. And also that you are being sensible about recovery.
No parkrun for me today either Debston, however, I did go a short 🚲 bike ride, got home and immediately ran run 3 of week 5 of C25K with Laura, after the run I bought my weekend food for this week and the following week as I will be running my second parkrun next week.
Well done to that 96 year old man for running a 5000 metres race in 42 minutes.
I have just watched the 5000 metres race at the Diamond League meeting in London, the winning time was 13.01.
Fantastic! I hope I'll be able to keep going that long! What is wrong with your hip? Just asking because mine is aching badly in between runs and has done for some time I had a good run this morning and now can barely manage the stairs without gritted teeth and some sound effects to boost morale. A few days off called for I think! Sorry you're missing your park run. I hate missing out on any run!
Oh no, a fellow sufferer! Not totally sure but it's been playing up for about 3 weeks now and I think it probably stems back to me doing my longest ever run (7km) and foolishly not doing any cool down walk or stretches. Felt a bit twingey afterwards and then after my next run, it started really playing up, almost as if something needs to click back into place. And every time it's started to feel better, I have rushed out to run again and set it off all over again. I'm finding that gentle exercise and stretches help, as well as Deep Heat cream and my new physix stick (a roller thing). Hope yours clears up soon and don't run on it until it feels back to normal, frustrating though it is! ☺
I think it is the speed that does it for me as I do warm up exercises as well as the warm up and cool down walk and stretches afterwards. I'm pretty thorough because of past injury lessons learned! When I looked at the stats later after my run I saw that I'd done my fastest 1 km and fastest mile which explains it all really! When I had ankle problems months ago any attempt at faster running pushed me over the edge and out of action for a few weeks. Ah well, I like slow rambling runs and I guess that is what my body wants. I've not really had any problems with the distances as long as I've kept it slow and did make it up to 12 km last month. Just passing that on in case it is a reassurance to you! A bit of time off fits in nicely with the heatwave this week!
That is reassuring about the distance - I have started the Bridge to 10k magic plan and completed Week 3 but been wondering if I need to abandon and stick to 5k runs. Thing is, I have entered for a 10k run in November so I really would like to get there, even if that is my one and only 10k ever!
I'm sure you'll get there and find it is fine. You could look at the warm up exercises as some are hip related. I didn't follow the plan, I just went out with each run and if I felt my body co-operating I gradually increased the distance each week. I've enjoyed the longer distances and found 7-8km is generally the distance I like to run. I think once you've had a break to recover you'll get back to it and probably never skimp on the stretching again haha! Painful lessons we learn! I have learned that one too along the way and now this is my second lesson to slow down!
Wishing you a speedy recovery Debston, and as for the 96 year old , what a superstar 👌
Hey Deb a lot of people at my parkrun who have injuries end up volunteering or going along just to cheer people on have you considered that it might help you keep the motivation for when you return x
Wishing you a speedy recovery off the ic. I’m on there too with similar impatience!
Poor you hope you heal soon
Wow it would be good to still be running in thirty plus years time
Hope you get back out there again soon. You could still get your parkrun fix by volunteering when injured. I was away from running last year for 6 months due to a back injury. I’m so sorry I didn’t volunteer more during that time.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and also hope for 90 year old running.
Damien
Hope for us all !!! Heal well my friend x
Have you tried going to the local pool and just letting yourself hang down off the side at the deep end to see if it helps things slot back in? I tried it on holiday and think it helped a bit. Good luck for the recovery 🙋♀️
Funny you should say that! I tried hanging off the side of the pool today, as if I was about to launch off for backstroke. I found that moving my hips down in the water and then back up again felt like it was helping. I have been meaning to get back into swimming, so I will keep going and hopefully improve my chances for getting back to running as well.
Fantastic! That's made me smile. I think I might be in a dangerous zone as I didn't actually miss parkrun this morning. I think I've done too good a job of convincing myself it's OK that I can't run for another month...
This is just amazing 😍 what an absolute legend. I’m a little bit in love with Roy now.
Hope you’re not stuck on the IC for too long Debston!
