Absolutely Devastated and mad!!

Went out for my Week 6 Run 2 today. For starters couldn’t find my normal hoodie I run with so took another. To experience about 2 minutes into running the zip falling down, highly annoying! This then caused my earphones to be unplugged as every 2 minutes I was pulling the zip up getting more and more frustrated! Which then in turn caused me to momentarily stop, less than a couple of seconds.

Carried on and completed the first 10minutes, feeling normal yet wound up at this point. Second 10 minutes comes around and my legs are heavy... usually I can run through this but today I couldn’t and at about 5 minutes couldn’t do anymore. I feel so deflated from this 😞 first time I have cried In years!!!

I can’t understand why it was hard today. I drank plenty (1 pint or more an hour before running) and I always snack/breakfast after running as I don’t want it sitting on my stomach. The only difference is I went out later in the morning. Gutted.

I know no run is a bad run but really wanted to see this through! This is my first failed run in the program 😞

I’m only a very inexperienced runner (week 2 run 2) so I can barely even call myself a runner but guna have ups and downs just got to keep pushing through well done on making it this far and think how far you have come! And well done for actually going out in the rain lots of people wouldn’t have even made it that far! 😃

Wasn’t raining today in the East Midlands but was extremely humid. Running in the rain last 2 runs was actually a lot of fun and easier. If I can get this far then you definitely can! My mind got the better of me today.

The mind is a weird and wonderful thing. With the right mindset you feel you can acheive whatever you start out doing. With a few little setbacks your task becomes much more difficult and your mindset becomes more testing and the little doubts that occur from things like headsets falling out or app not working become massive even you don't think you let them. Having said all this you went out and ran. Massive achievement from where you were 6 weeks ago. Repeat the run and move on.

Thanks! I will get this run in the bag, even if it kills me. I just don’t understand how my legs were hurting so much more than my run on Thursday, by now my legs are usually feeling ok, but today they are still aching massively.

Don't use the F word, use of it means you have to buy everyone a drink, you practiced the run that's all.

It only takes a little think to throw off your breathing, that in turn can then affect your legs and everything thing else then falls apart.

Don't worry about it, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and do it again, you'll smash it next time.

I don’t drink 🙈 would fruit suffice instead?? Apologies, I won’t use it again. I can and will do this! I have run more in previous sessions this is what frustrates me most right now.

Don't worry about it, EVERYONE has good days and bad days, first time I did C25K I hated week 6 runs 1 & 2, after the steady pace of W5R3 the intervals screwed up my breathing and threw my enjoyment of the runs. I have these runs again next week and partially expect the same kind of thing again.

Just forget about it, get your favourite hoodie ready the evening before your next run and that will set your mind at rest.

Good to know, Week 5 Run 3 was in-fact easier I must agree but had mentally prepared myself that these two specific runs were going to be hard. Onwards and upwards as they say.

Week 6 runs 1 and 2 catch a lot of people out. You’ve clearly understood the situation well though: you can do this, it’s not long since you ran 20 minutes non stop after all so you can definitely do it. It just wasn’t happening today for some reason. You may figure out the reason or you may not. Sometimes in these situations taking a second rest day helps - it may be that either your body or your mind needs a wee bit more recovery time just this once.

I did the first run this week fine with no issue, even ran up half a hill at the end of the session! I was so looking forward to doing the same today. I just understand today and maybe I won’t but just putting it down to experience and will get back in it Monday. I usually do one rest day and has never been an issue, will see how I feel Monday.

Aw, Matthew, you live and learn! We all have ‘bad’ runs now and again - I still do and I have been running for 2 years and up to 14k now! The difference is, as time goes on, you worry less about them. Running is as much a mental challenge as a physical one, so the whole zip/headphone malarkey just put you off your game I reckon. As for aching legs - if it’s any consolation, my legs used to ache something rotten when I was doing C25K. I even took a couple of days rest between runs some times to get over the aches. Now, I can run 10k and legs feel back to normal by the next morning. Legs still building up muscle when you first start to run but of course, this will ease off the more you run/the stronger your legs get. Rome wasn’t built in a day...

Try drinking a good amount of water the day BEFORE your run, too.

Hope the next run is a happier one!

See normally my legs are back to normal the next day too, still aching now but they are infact easing off now. I know it’s mind of matter exercise but I simply ran out of puff today, I wanted to keep going but my legs today said no more. I will get it done, watch out for Monday. 😊 I am also constantly drinking all day, I don’t drink tea or coffee at all so it is all just water (with the odd coke once a week) but will make the effort to drink more. I probably go through on average 3/4 pints of water at work a day and then another one or two at home.

Then it sounds to me like just “one of those runs”. It happens to all of us, and sometimes you can never pin point why! I am sure you will nail it on Monday. Don’t dwell on how you felt today, just shrug it off. That’s what I do now and invariably I am back to form on the next run!

Thanks! I want to smash this!

Hoodie? In this weather?

Never drink that much before running - hydrate the day before. This also stops heavy legs and stitches. Just a couple of sips that soon before a run.

Matthew1990 profile image

Yeah, just what I feel comfortable in right now 🤷🏻‍♂️

I do hydrate during the day the day before, always drinking between 5/6 pints of water. I will give that a go next run and not drink that much it’s just that usually when I wake in the morning I have a dry mouth so my routine has always to have a drink before going about my day let alone running! Thanks for the advice I will definitely bare it in mind!

I had exactly the same problem on this run earlier in the week. It ended up being the only one I’ve had to repeat. Might be all in the head, who knows. You can easily do it again. Second time for me was okay, but I think my head was in a better place so I got it done and did the 25 min run today and felt great after it.

It’s all just practice and you’ll do it. Enjoy!

Good to hear! Defiantly not going to let this defeat me. Trying not to over analyse it too much. Massive negative of mine. I guess you just can’t plan for these kind of things. Well done on the 25minutes today 🤙🏻😊

I’m in the West Midlands so not too far away and was so relieved it wasn’t pouring down this morning. Also went out a little later and was very warm. Was actually missing a bit of drizzle. Don’t let it get you down. You’ll be fine when you get your usual top on.
