Body feels a bit decrepit!

Hi all

Completed my first run this morning (D1w1) and it wasn’t too bad. I’m “over 40” though and haven’t done any serious exercise for a while, and my body feels like it’s going to fall apart - my knees have been aching over the last few years and every time my foot touches the floor today, my body rattled like it’s going to give way 😂

Is this a normal thing for older beginners, does it get better, or do you just have to get used to it? I did take it easy too (hopefully not too easy!).

Is it worth looking at any joint supplements or similar, or is it just part of getting old?

Hi there,

It's absolutely normal. Your body hasn’t a clue what’s going on, and just cries 'Whaaaat?'.

I was 59 when I started. After the first run I had lost the power of speech, and I couldn’t even get in the shower for a hour or so. Everything hurt.

The good news is that it’s never that difficult again. You’ll be surprised how quickly your body gets used to running. Just take it nice and easy.

Good luck!

It depends. If you are in agony, that's not normal. If it just feels a bit achey, then that is pretty standard to start with. Look at how you are putting your feet down, try and land lightly rather than splatting your foot down hard. Jogging uphill or on the flat is kinder on your joints than running downhill. Have you got proper running shoes yet? That can make a huge difference. Buy half a size bigger than you usually buy as your feet expand while running. And well done for getting started! That's the hardest part!

53 yo here. Graduated last week. Never been a distance runner. Trust in the programme, there is no such thing as too slow. You will be amazed in 9weeks time why you ever felt this way.

Welcome and just run... aches and pains for most folk are normal... steady and slow is the mantra and do check out the post for Newbies:)

Breathe normally and if it is a struggle then slow down more:)

Take it very gently.....you will be fine... I started this at 65... I was 69 this year and am still running and have not fallen apart yet... even when I did my HM in March..:)

Thanks everyone! I’ll stick to it, slow and steady. It’s not agony, just really uncomfortable, think just my bottle rattling away as it’s jot experienced anything like this for about 30 years!

I’ve got some Asics from a previous get fit I nearly attempted a few years back, so just got to do the next one now. W1R2 on Wednesday.

Thanks again, I will complete this!
