Taking a break ☹️

After getting to W8 R2 I’ve sadly got to stop and give in to my shin splints. Have probably wrongly battled through the pain over last few weeks but it’s way too much now. Feel sad and annoyed to have got so far, never missed a run and loved it. Will take a break for a week or so and just hope I get my momentum back. Annoying when you finally find something that you love doing but can’t!!

Hi Chuckiegg. I'm taking a break due to hip flexor problems and I'm at W11R1 (I'm just carrying on from where the programme got me to, working on increasing pace from 3.5K in 30 mins). I am so loving running - the increase in fitness, the personal achievement - the amazing overall mood elevation. I've just bought some very expensive running trainers to make sure I return. But the internet says rest for a week+ and I will. Also I have become more health aware as a result of running and had my cholesterol tested. It's v high - 8.3 total - so now I'm changing my diet too - to see if I can control it before resorting to statins.

Get advice on the splints and get back as soon as you can without pain! Good luck.

Thank you, same to you. Hope you have a swift recovery. Yes its become a bit of an addiction for me! Having suffered with low mood for quite a while, running has given me a new lease of life. Hopefully won’t be out of action for too long! 😬

Oh that is so gutting. Take a break as you day and I know I post this to everyone but so often it is the answer! But have you seen this - the Japanese slow jogging technique - it’s a low impact style of running designed to prevent injury.

I love this style of running and run this way all the time, but it can also be a useful technique to get you back running gently after injury, and some people have found it useful if they’re having a ‘bad’ run and use it to finish. Here’s to a speedy recovery, and back to running asap.

Thanks. Yes I’ve seen the slow jogging technique, it’s brilliant. Once I get back running I’ll use it I think.

It's swim time Chuckie! The pool is a runner's best friend. Get excited about it! The pool is the place to maintain fitness and it's great for recovery.

I get that exact same pain, I always get it when I've been out for a long time. Sometimes I can run through it, but sometimes I just have to accept that it's SWIM TIME 🏊‍♂️! for a week.

Quick question are you doing shin stretches? Shin/ankle stretches are the only stretches I do before and after a run. It really helps, there are loads on the internet. verywellfit.com/shin-stretc...

Good luck, stay positive, you'll be back out there and graduating soon enough.

Many thanks for that. I do shin stretches after a run but not before, I shall try that. It’s weird, walking about is agony but once I start to run the pain goes away but I know I’m not doing myself any favours by running through it. I’ve never been a keen swimmer but maybe now it’s time to give it a go 😬
