Week 1 run 2

Hi all, completed week 1 run 2 yesterday. Started couch to 5k as I have just signed up for me and my kids to run the Westminster mile run at the end of May. My kids have ran it before with their school running club and normally I’m just watching from the sideline and now I want to take part. I also want to build up my stamina as I have been doing boxing classes 3 or 4 times a week for a year now. If there’s any tips on breathing while running that would be appreciated as my legs don’t get tired but I get a bit tight in the chest as I’m trying to catch my breath and I don’t really think I’m jogging fast.

Well done on joining the club and well done for signing up for a goal already!

I’m going to use a phrase that you will almost certainly read a lot in the next few weeks.

Slow Down

I’m sure IannodaTruffe says it in his linked article too.

When I started I thought I was going really slow, but I struggled with shin splints. I got told a lot - Slow Down!

What I noticed certainly down to week 4 - I got slower every run. I was still jogging, I just got slower. With slowness came relief from my shin splints.

It’s true slowing down helps.

I can’t remember if Iannoda says it in his linked post but if you get out of breath you are going too fast. If you ease off I’m fairly sure you’ll get a really pleasant surprise.

Another thing that was recommended to me was to watch a video on the Japanese Slow Jogging movement and to find your Niko Niko Pace (I recommend digging into this - it’s incredibly interesting g reading / viewing). There’s a book by a chap called Takoda available on Amazon, and recently it was for sale on a kindle for 99p. See if it’s still that price and have a read. Well worth it.

Hope you stick around.

Happy trails.
