First incompleted run since I started c25k in August. Am I the only one?

This morning I set off for a thirty minute run (plus warm up and cool down walks of course!). I had run not much more than 20 minutes when I felt I couldn't do more, and slowed down to a walk for a few minutes. I then ran to the end and a bit more, so probably covered about 30 mins in total, but not together. I'm trying to work out the reason I ran out of steam. For the first time I didn't have my phone with me, so no encouragement/podcast/music in my ears. I also hadn't run for five days due to granny duty in London. My last run was a fabulous park run on Saturday, where the adrenalin kept me going for the full 5k. I'm not going to do this week's park run, as I'm sure I wouldn't repeat my sub-40 minute time from Saturday.

I know we don't use the 'f' word on this forum, but I didn't feel much of a success today, especially as I've completed every other run I've started. I think I need to work on consolidation, and plan to tune in to Laura on my next run.

Have others had this problem? Any tips?

You’re a success... you did that parkrun and that was a longer run for you than your usual one... maybe the next one should have been shorter anyway? When you look at a running plan, you’d see a long run is followed by a short recovery run, so possibly it would have been better to target 20 minutes today in the first place?!

Maybe you were less aware of pace today without the tech and went a bit quicker.

You ran 20 minutes more today than you did in the whole of July... how great is that when you think about it???

Thanks so much for those words. Very interesting what you say about a short recovery run after a longer one. And funnily enough, I did wonder about a 20 minute run beforehand, but felt that as I'd done so many 30 minute runs it'd be a doddle. All part of the learning process.

And you're right of course about last July!!

Hi Janfran, from another jan...

I’m a bit further on the graduation path than you, but it’s fair to say I now generally don’t ‘plan’ a distance, because over time I’ve learnt that sometimes the legs just don’t do what you think. Generally now my minimum distance is 2/3rds of my ‘maximum’ - but then one fine run, when the stars were aligned I did triple my usual distance.

You’re on your ‘provisional’ running licence at present, so still each run is a great learning opportunity.

Personally I’m hopeless at naked running and I tried podcasts but they didn't work for me, and over time I’ve learnt it’s my music that gets me into my running headspace.

No run is a wasted run, you’ve put minutes and kms in your running bank, it all adds to help your future running life.

Best of luck on your next relaxed run

Thanks for your tips, JCR. How great, to have done three times your usual - well done! I definitely think I need something to run to, so will always try to take my phone. I couldn't take it this morning as I was away from home and didn't have my phone holder thing. Not planning a distance sounds like a good idea, though I was fine until over half-way, so wouldn't know at what stage I'd get tired.

A relaxed run sounds good - I'll work on it!
