Stuck on w5r1

Hi all, newbie here!

Been doing the c25k for a few weeks now but can't seem to feel confident about moving on from w5r1 due to my calf muscle.

For some reason, my calf muscle seems to seize up and goes really stiff, making it painful to carry on running. I do complete the run, but just at a slower pace to ease the pain until the next of the of the 5 min runs.

I've been doing this run for just under 3 weeks now and the same happens each time.

A friend at work suggested doing a few leg warm ups before starting, which haven't really made much difference.

I really want to progress now. I'm off on hols in 7 weeks and would love to be able to do the full 5k in that time.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

This may seem counterintuitive but many running programmes recommend a full weeks rest every few weeks to give your body time to recuperate and get stronger. Why don't you give that a try, perhaps take a couple of long walks in that week then get back to the programme. If you have a slight calf strain it might help?

Hydration, good warm up, static stretches after each run... maybe dynamic stretches before each run.

Those are the 4 most likely helps

Oh... and that pace you slowed down to... start at that pace!

Go get it checked out..if it is recurring then it needs sorting.

A sports physio is your best bet....expert advice is useful and will give you the appropriate action and exercises to follow:)

It is all too easy to cause more damage:)

ok so quick update. went to the GP after having a few days off due to other commitments (had to go anyway regarding another health problem) and mentioned it. She thinks it may be lactic acid build up and said to make sure that I stretch my leg muscles for at least a couple of minutes before and after each run. It certainly seemed to help. I could feel it coming on a little towards the end of the run but nothing like it was last week. Starting to feel a little more confident now and looking forward to hopefully get progressing
