Getting started and feeling determined

Saddened by my transition over twenty years from energetic and well proportioned active 30 yr old to out of shape 50 yr old blob. Lost 6 kilo through following low blood sugar regime this month and feel better for it. Today I forced myself to increase the activity to sustain my progress. W1R1 got me very warm but recovered quickly. BMI approaching 30. Lots to be positive about.

Thanks, feel good but I need to protect myself from overdoing it and damaging my fragile knees

Bore yourself silly with the most important rule, go slow. Have a gait analysis done and get some good shoes (if you havn't already). They will reduce the problems caused by running.

Good luck, post your progress

The sport scientists at work were quite keen on barefoot running to give a lower impact gait, if I remember correctly.

Only on a treadmill I would guess. I've never heard that before but I'm not an expert. I'm not sure barefoot would be better than the correct trainers. Perhaps someone else on the forum will advise.

Hi, If by w4 your staying with the running then it's about time to get some proper running shoes, have a gait analysis and fitting in a reputable running shop. If you get some mild knee niggles from arthritis, I do, maybe try running on grass and trails instead of continuous pounding of road running, vary the surfaces. Running doesn't cause knee pain if the knee joints are good and pain free in the first place, but it can exacerbate the problem if it's already there. Remember, go slow and steady..
