Hump day of consolidation and I had the hump, as some of you are aware.

I was meant to run yesterday morning - my birthday - but on Sunday night I had reached the point where none of my kids had organised getting a card to me and I look set to see none of my family. So I went to bed in a grump, woke up in a bigger one and just snoozed my alarm until I had to get up and go to work.

I did see my stepson briefly last night and went to bed in a slightly better mood, but full of pizza and Chianti and ice cream. So I woke up this morning a bit hungover and full of junk food. And didn’t run again.

With encouragement (read: nagging) from some of you, I left work early tonight, avoiding an evening meeting I would usually attend, got home, changed into my running gear and went for it.

Run was slow - I ran the same distance as Saturday but took 38 seconds longer over 32 mins! Yeah, well, it felt much slower. No ragged breathing again.

About every 5 minutes for the first 10 I just wanted to stop. There’s a certain point on my route where I know how much further I have to go and it is over halfway “out”, so it seems a waste not to continue. So I did.

Rest of the run uneventful again. It was a lot hotter than I’m used to from morning runs.

Walking back, my episode of Desert Island Disks (Christopher Nolan) ended and I came home in silence, which was very peaceful.

Still feeling meh but calm with it. Nice shower, now watching the webcast of the meeting I’m meant to be at, taking notes and trying to cheer up. I think there’s some Chianti left...

Hey Jay this is not like you!! But well done for getting back out there we all I’m sure will have these days but you have done the right thing getting back out there and thrashing it x

So glad you managed to get out there today Jay x

Enjoy the Chianti! 🍷 and your day off tomorrow. Sorry to hear your family problems, you know what kids are like. If I didn't buy a card for the kids to write for me, I wouldn't get one. My OH thinks they're a waste of money, and it's a great excuse for the kids to pick up on.

Never mind, tomorrow's a new day and you're doing so much for yourself, getting fitter, healthier and looking after that ticker, so just look after you and you'll soon pick up. How about seeing yourself a new reward to work towards? Wireless earphones, new gear, fitness tracker or something else. Not something that would come easy, make it a goal.

Thanks, but no day off tomorrow.

Kids are 30, 26 and 19...

I just meant running! Surely you're not running tomorrow?

My eldest is 15 and she would never dream of going to the shop for a card. She'll be 16 soon and I was rather hoping maturity would kick in. Seems from your experience that I could be in for a long wait.

I'm so sorry it ruined your birthday, horrible feeling like that.

Well done Jay. Nice to know you seasoned runners also feel like giving in especially in the first ten minutes. Happy birthday for yesterday. 🎉

Oh Jay don't be down. You have been such an inspiration to me - and I'm sure many others on here. I'm sending you lots of virtual hugs. Such a shame your family weren't around on your birthday- it's a good job we can choose our friends eh? 😉Hopefully the chianti will help. At least you got out there & well done - I know how hard it is when you feel down. Go gentle and keep on running.

PS - happy belated birthday 🎉

Kids huh? I swear they get more egocentric the older they get... well done for beating the blues and getting out there. You’re a fabulous support to all of us on our journey. Sending you a belated birthday hug. 🤗🎂🏃🏻‍♂️🥇

I feel your grump re the cavalier attitude children have to parent’s birthdays. I remember my 49th which was forgotten by my entire family. It ended up positive though as i channelled my grump into making a life/career changing decision which turned out to be the best thing i ever did. Next to doing c25k of course...keep the fairh and keep 🏃🏻‍♂️🏃🏻‍♂️🏃🏻‍♂️

Happy birthday for yesterday Jay! I'm sorry you felt a bit abandoned by your family. Glad to hear you made time for your run, even if you didn't enjoy it as much as some of your others. Take care of yourself!

Well done for getting out there and doing it Jay, sounds like a particularly tough time. Hopefully this whole running malarkey can help ease some of the stress. Keep at it :)

Belated happy birthday jay .

I know from previous posts , a little of your situation .

You know what- you have so much to be proud of. You have achieved so much. Be proud Jay- very proud. You have come SO far. I can understand how hurt/ sad you’re feeling and I can’t take that away. Things will get easier. Be kind to yourself. You ran. You did good.

Sending big hugs 👏🏻❤️😘

Thanks. Someone told me the first “everything” is hard and they are right. I didn’t expect it to be this hard.

Ah mate! First, happy belated birthday. 🎂🎂🍷 Secondly, hope that you're feeling a bit more chipper now. If not, get your running shoes on and go again! It's good for body and mind. Lots of love.

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to 18Windmill

Yep I’ve mellowed out. It was one of those deep calm ends to the run. An old episode of Morse, the last of the Chianti, feet up.

18Windmill profile image
18WindmillGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

I'd go for a Malbec but Morse all the time...although I do love Endeavour. Looking fwd to hearing your further adventures...mine seem to be stalling! Only been out twice since graduating!!

Jay66UK profile image
Jay66UKGraduate in reply to 18Windmill

Watching Morse back of just watching Endeavour all the way through. Prefer Endeavour as well.

Get out and run. You know you want to.

I'm glad you got out and I think part of you will be too.👏

I think the family biz has brought you down understandably and that's left you vulnerable to the usual gremlins.

I hope everything aligns for a better mindset Thursday for you 🤞😉

Sorry you had a rubbish birthday. I know how hurtful it is when people you love don’t treat you how you deserve. Well done for getting out there today, I hope you feel a huge sense of achievement for going out even though your head’s not quite in it. Hopefully after a day’s rest you will be raring to go again 😊
