First Consolidation Run

This was my third attempt since graduating to run. I tried on Monday but the bottom part of my stomach muscles felt really sore and my body felt like it wasn’t in the mood, so I stopped after 5 minutes. I tried again yesterday and my head felt like it wasn’t in the mood. I was really fed up because yesterday the conditions were perfect for a run in the afternoon and my head was like naaahhh.

So today I woke up at 6 having had 7 solid hours sleep and felt much more up for it. I decided to run with Laura and my music but not gauge distance today. I just wanted to finish. The first 5 minutes were fine, the incline was manageable and my head was behaving itself, though I do think I sounded a bit wheezy today. I hit 10 minutes and I was feeling ok but understanding that the next few minutes were the telling part of the run. I approached the Heath having run 12 minutes and my usual route was blocked as they were doing some tarmac renovation.

So I carried on running along the road which is essentially downhill turned right into Mansfield Road and ran until I got to the entrance of the Heath by the lido and this was new territory as it’s quite a steep incline. This is the part I usually run downhill at the end of the run. I found myself having to run up it midway through the run. I got up as far as the lido and decided to run around the lido instead of going further up the hill as my legs were a bit achy. I ran around the lido twice and then ran back down the hill but I still had 5 minutes left. I ran back up Mansfield Road and then up a side road. The last 90 seconds I doubled back on myself and ran downhill again. A slightly strange route but I finished it and got the first run under my belt since graduation.

It was a testing run but one I’m relieved to have to completed and I don’t feel particularly tired either. Recovery time is good.

In two weeks I go back to the asthma nurse to get my lungs checked again. I suspect they are going to up my preventive dosage again as I’m sure I shouldn’t be sounding this wheezy. Having said that it isn’t stopping me running. Today I conquered my head too.

Job done!

Glad to hear you managed to complete your first run since graduating - such a big achievement!

With regards to the asthma, I've started bundling scarves etc near my throat/chest as the cold is a big trigger for me in the winter, not sure if it's the same for you but could be a reason why you're more wheezy?

Thank you. I’ve been very wheezy since February. Not sure if I had the virus or whether I’m just finding it harder running outside. Even though I’m wheezy my breathing is good enough to do the run. I’ll have a word with the nurse again soon and see what they think. My peak flow is a bit low. Between 400 and 450. What’s yours?

Yes could be, your lung might be finding it hard to adjust to the harsher outside weather. Make sure you're breathing primarily through your nose as it slightly warms the air before hitting your lungs. Oh god, I haven't taken my peak flow in forever - thanks for the reminder! I would anticipate it being quite good at the moment as haven't had asthma attack in months and basically no wheezing either.

Thank you!!

Well done DL! 3rd time lucky.

I'm tempted just to do laps round the block tonight as it's started lashing down to put it politely 😁and tomorrow ain't looking any better!!

Thanks Burkey. I am a great believer in doing whatever you have to do in order to get 30 minutes under your belt. Laps around the block sound pretty good to me.
