Hi and welcome. I started the programme end of March as a 20 a day smoker for 44 years, after 2 runs I thought I quite liked this running business and knew I wouldn't achieve what I wanted if I kept smoking so I had my last cigarette befor r3 w1. I do vape at the moment but have every intention to wean off this soon.
I completed my first 5k tonight and although not record breaking time I know quitting has helped me achieve it.
Good on you for starting the programme, it is infectious and everyone on this forum will support and encourage everyone. Any help with quitting smoking just ask. Good luck, give it a shot, you may like it
Thanks Jay. Gave myself a good kick up the ... and thought I don't care if I'm out here till midnight I will run 5K. ..lol..see if the body reacts tomorrow
Distance done but nothing speedy, 39 mins but I'm happy with that. Something to build on now. You've inspired me to try a ParkRun. Will do one Saturday week then the following Saturday is my Race for Life 5K. Can't wait to hear how yours goes on Saturday
Wait 'til W5, you'll be sweating like a pig in an abattoir. . . . .
Tips on running: get some comfortable shoes - it really does make a difference; don't be a hero - keep at a pace that lets you keep running, don't worry what other people are doing; get some tunes going - helps you find a rhythm; stick to the program - take your rest days and don't skip sessions; plan your sessions into your week - makes it a lot easier to stick with it . . . . . . most of all, ENJOY IT!
Tips on quitting smoking, only one . . . make sure it is something YOU really want to do. If you doing it because you think should you will struggle. Deep down you must really want to do it.
Thanks for the message, and yeah I think I do need some running shoes as pumps are not great. As for giving up smoking it's something I have wanted to do for a while but always think they help with stress but it's just an excuse to really. Will be posting both progresses each day
Best advice I can give you is take it steady on the runs and don’t run too far in crap trainers. Get some cushioning under your feet and you’ll reduce your chance of injury. Well done for starting. Good luck with the plan!
First off as the saying on here is keep running 🏃 "slow & steady" it really works and gets you through your runs.
Secondly I'm not promoting e-cigs but 11 and a half months ago months ago I quit smoking, I bought a cheap e-cig and it obviously helped with cravings, and not had a cigarette since.
I cut down the nicotine by the fortnights (a bit quick but I wanted off)
Good luck and remember your only human so try and try again if needs be 😉
Well done! I'm only on week 1 so no advice on running but I have successfully given up smoking! Like others, I bought a cheap e-cig.. I told everyone (apart from my wife!) that I'd given up but kept the e-cig on me and secretly had a puff or two only when I was really desperate. After multiple attempts, this was the only one that worked.. And that was 5 years ago! But if you've successfully gone cold turkey before then you can definitely do it again!
I started 12 months ago; gav eup smoking, went on a diet and joined a gym. When I felt like smoking or eating I'd go to the gym. My body quickly got confused with all the cravings until it decided I was craving a workout at the gym all the time 😉
