Hi guys, I’ve been struggling to loose weight for years now and the one thing I’ve never done is run ‘properly’. I’m fine on a treadmill but as soon as I’m on the ground I really struggle! I’m starting my Ct5K journey today... anyone got any advice for me? I’m a complete newbie to running but I actually love exercise in general, don’t even know if I’ve got the right shoes!!
Wish me luck! ☺️🙈🏃♀️

Advice??? Slow it down and then slow it some more! You can do this whether inside or out. However ‘proper’ shoes will make a difference so worth investing in.
Thanks it looks like a minefield though!! 😫 are simple running shoes enough? I do live near pinewoods but at the moment I’m keeping to roads until my cardio improves :’)
Honestly? I started in my daughters!!! Big mistake. I went to my local sports store who had me running on a treadmill slowly for about 5 seconds and filmed my stride and gait. I needed a good cushioned sole (I strive for ‘kissing the ground’ but more like stomping the grapes😂) and my feet rolled in (pronated). I now have trainers just for me and it’s helped impact aches and pains and I don’t have sore shins. Go to the people that know their stuff!
Best advice.... stick with it. Doesn't matter how slow, just get through them. Your technique will improve with time. I kept banging my ankles together and my knees early on but now that rarely happens.
Good shoes that fit properly are important. Mine are a whole size bigger than I would have bought so do get fitted.
Most of all... have fun! And share with us so we can support you on your journey 👍😁
I went to the gym and treadmill ran but couldn't run outside for love nor money. Found this podcast and site 5+ years ago and there was no stopping me! Just take it steadily and you will do it. You can leave the shoes for a few weeks unless you are getting problems in your feet, ankles, shins then the sooner you get gait analysis the better.
For the first few weeks I think you could do it in any old trainers- you’re only doing short runs. But as you get further along its worth getting decent ones, and you can feel the difference. Plus by then you will feel more committed to it and happy to spend out on trainers!
Good luck with it, trust the programme and you will do it- it’s brilliant!! (I’m week 8 having never once exercised in my 41 years!)
Stick with the program. I am now on week 8 but having a week or 2 off - snow and illness. I am the point i now feel bad/guilty for not running. All i will do is go back a week or 2 on the plan and start again.
What i found helped me was using the fitness app on my phone to track my runs. As well as showing me where i ran, how fast, how many calories i used etc i can also see how my fitness has improved. It also gave me virtual rewards when i improved my pace, distance etc.
The pod cast really help, all you do is listen and run. Its like having a personal trainer.
My best advice it to ice the quads. I run at least twice a week on a treadmill and if I’m not scared to go outside I’ll try that too. But icing my quads at night gave me the most relief that the next morning my run was unbelievably great. I would run more but my job makes me work graveyard shifts which throws off my whole body so i try my best to not stress myself out over exercising and try to eat the best when I can’t exercise. So Practice RICE (rest ice compression elevation) on those legs and you’ll love running just like I do. I hope...
