A new planet to me!!!

Hello. This is literally like a new planet to me! 45 years old, overweight & not run since 1985 (honestly .....). Today I had a complete spur of the moment decision to start the app & coerced my daughter to come with me. We headed out in the dark so can’t be seen & I cannot believe I did my first run. I actually ran!!! Like actual running! I dread to think what I looked like with my bulk wobbling around but it was such a buzz. Has anyone else done this with a “challenging” body frame?!!! Thank you

Hee hee😀 I’m doing it too with a “challenging “ body. Couldn’t have got this far without sports bra and compression leggings. I wear another pair of plain leggings on top as the first pair were stretched out to near enough see through. Even under the cover of darkness it was not a good look. Good luck with your running journey.

Hi. Here I am on week six, over weight. Kept thinking I won't be able to do it my body is too heavy. I can't run for 90 seconds etc etc. Wel done for starting. Please keep going. You can do this. If I can do it you can do it.

The week 6 music is brilliant! Very motivating and I hum it all day lol

MissyMoff profile image
MissyMoff in reply to Dyskadores

I am confused? What do you mean by week 6 music? (sorry to be thick!)

Dyskadores profile image
Dyskadores in reply to MissyMoff

The NHS Couch to 5k podcasts have music already added :)

AlMorr profile image

It just means that the music on week 6 is a bit different to the accompanying music you have heard on weeks 1 to 5, you are not thick, we are all here to help.

Where is the music? I have the app with jo whiley etc.

Use the NHS Couch to 5k podcasts - they have music already added :)

Ahh...perhaps it’s because it’s the podcast not the app?

Dyskadores profile image
Dyskadores in reply to Assumpta888

Not sure. If you go to the NHS website you can get all the podcasts 😄

I believe that's one of the distinctions.

Was 16 stone when I began and W1R1 was a huge struggle

6 months later at 12 stone I run 5km sub 28 mins easily sub 25 once

Last night I did 7km for fun and have done 10km sub 60 again for fun

The program works really well slow and steady speed comes later

You will find your natural pace and it will suddenly click and you’re a runner

Yes chicken and broccoli for lunch most days and porridge for breakfast and a good tea and run 3-4 times a week

Lots of wobbling here too at the start and heavily overweight but stick with it - the feelings of bliss and wellbeing at the end of each run are amazing - so much so that I can't wait for the rest days to be over! I've even gone out in the lashing rain to get my fix (and I was the definition of couch potato at week zero)! Your body just sort of responds - my lungs have got much more efficient, I can run without stopping and my body feels much less wobbly. The week 6 music is the best!! I completed week 9 yesterday and felt like I could keep running beyond 30 minutes (which is miraculous) and Laura is the best coach EVER. So calm and quietly encouraging without being patronising. Keep going! Well done!!

It seems so far away!!!! I’m a big girl but tall so look a lot lighter than I am!! I feel very inspired by these responses 😊

Week 9 will be here before you know it and you'll be running for 30 mins and loving it! 😄

I feel your pain. I managed to get to week 3 before Christmas then pulled a ligament in my knee so had 6 weeks off. Then in January I stopped eating meat, Lost 8lb and yesterday started all over again. First run and felt great.

Well done on starting, that's the hardest part.

Oh yes!!!

I’m definitely built for comfort not speed, but am on w3r3 and haven’t keeled over yet!

Keep going - you’ve got this!

Well done Bingaloo!!! My shape is less than flattering. I’ve had 4 little boys in as many consecutive years. I wobble where I didn’t even realise I had body fat. Keep it up!! Enjoy the euphoria. Well done xxx

Bingaloo you've definitely come to the right place, although not challenging in size I started this programme having never run (I had a note from my mum at school to miss cross country because I used to get terrible cramps) I was coerced into running by my Macmillan physio after I was recovering from breast cancer and a mastectomy. I got to week 8 before having a lumpectomy on the other breast, but after a few days was out building up my walking, and eventually started the programme again from scratch (but with uber high impact sports bras to stop anything from even thinking about moving).

I was so chuffed when I graduated (finished the programme) and have continued running for well over a year and even completed two 10k races, one Race For Life (fundraising for cancer research) and another local event. I'm a complete convert and even take my kit with me when I go on holiday.

If you follow the programme slowly and steadily you will be surprised at what you can achieve. This forum has been great too. There will be days when your brain is saying no, but you can do it. You just have to ignore the gremlins in your head that are telling you otherwise (you will find lots of references to gremlins in my early posts).

Good luck and happy running. :-)

Well done Bingaloo, you got moving so it's all good. yep I'm a 'challenging' also. I've lost 55lb and still need to loose the same amount plus more. The way I look at it though Is I'm moving, moving a lot more than I ever have in my life. I was barely able to run 1min at the beginning in week 1, now I'm starting week 7 in a few days and I'm running 22 mins. You'll be surprised by what your body can do. Keep up the good work!

Well done you.

I started 6 weeks ago. All 20st of me!

Struggled to run a minute and thought I couldn’t do it but still going strong and finished a 20 minute run yesterday for the end of week 5!

Keep going, you can do this x
