Week 9 so near yet so far

I’ve just finished run 2 of this final week. So very pleased with myself that I’m running for 30 mins but as for 5k - I’m tantalisingly close to the distance but not quite there . Does the magical number come on run 3?

Graduated in August and as yet haven't run 5k in 30 minutes but still a happy runner!

Aah that’s good to hear I thought that was my aim . I’m just really glad to be running at all . I can’t quite believe that I’m out there in wind and cold, plus the occasional wet feet. Tell me is spring and summer running a joy compared to this?

Same point here: I managed 4.6km on R1 and 4.81km on R2, so I am quite optimistic for R3!

I’m sure you can do this too!!

Well I’ll be cheering you on too for the final run. I measure in miles because my brain is locked into it, should I manage 3 you will hear my cry of triumph wherever you are! Good luck

Well done! No, you don't have to reach 5k, just the 30 mins, then keep doing the 30 min runs (consolidate) and try getting to run those comfortably, 5k will come naturally as you go on.. there's no pressure to get to 5k, do it in your own time, just keep at it.. it'll get you fitter and keep you fit, incorporate hills if you can, if not already doing them for endurance..

Thank you, I was thinking of doing a park run next week but I didn’t want to be the tail end charlie that stopped the volunteers getting their cuppas in the cafe . Also as I run alone I’m also hoping no one will speak to me since I’ve never tested the ‘being able to hold a conversation’ measure 🤭

Go for the Parkrun. I can almost guarantee you won’t be last but if you want check out the results from previous runs to see what the slowest tones are. I think you will be surprised! You sound as though you will be close to 31 minutes for the 5k which is brilliant at this stage. Good luck!

Thanks for that boost, I’m going to register- nothing ventured nothing gained as they say! And as it’s christmas I can wear a sparkly hat what more incentive do I need? 🤶

As long as you keep moving briskly around the course there's no problem with how long you'll take, anyway the volunteer tailwalker is always last. And you don't have to talk to anyone, maybe just a smile a nod or a wave is all that's needed..

Well I’ve registered now so nothing to stop me. Don’t know why I’m so nervous about it, I guess I don’t really believe I’m a runner yet despite Sarah milican telling me I am 🙂

Nope... and maybe not at all..but...running for 30 minutes, having had fun and got here injury free....that is all it takes:)

Thanks, I must remember that this is not a punishment but an achievement. Injury free so far and sometimes it is fun ( I think)🤔

It is.. honestly... and it just gets better!

No it usually comes a while after - almost 6 months after in my case. Don't worry about it, just keep going. I was so close for so long I thought it would never happen and then suddenly I got a park run time that started with a 29.

Yes I guess patience has never been my strong point ! After all from never ever running in my life I should be very pleased to get as far as I have

I've been doing park runs since week 5 and I haven't been last yet. Some people only walk the park run and take anything up to 90 minutes so you have no worries there. 38:20 is my best time so far on W8R3 .Don't think I will ever finish the 5K in 30 minutes but I aim to get a bit faster eventually.

Oh thank you for that, I dreaded turning up and finding that everyone was a greyhound and I’d be left wondering where everyone had gone !

1slowcoach profile image
1slowcoachGraduate in reply toLookNannyruns

There are always greyhounds there (they usually lap me and finish in 17 minutes) but they usually have a designated tail walker who has to be last so they know everyone has finished.

The greyhounds are usually 30+ years younger than me lol....I just aim to beat the 84 year old who runs in ours

How do you know how far you’re running? I’m guessing everyone has an app that I don’t have. Which ones best?

And keep going - you’ll have a good day (I had a good day yesterday) and it’ll just happen. I’m at exactly same stage as you but difference is I’m just so chuffed - and amazed - to be running!!

You’re right , speed or distance are really furthest from my mind , I’m just coming to terms with the idea that I can call myself a runner!

I use RunKeeper, but there is also Runtastic and an app by Nike as well.

I just did run 2 of week 9 too. Only at about 4.4km, but I'll take it =)

Well done fellow nearly finisher. I think I had this idea in my head that by week nine I would running 5k cos that’s what the programme is called. Doh , still I’m very pleased to be doing what I am and the 5k is probably the carrot I need to keep me running after this
