Just to say I did it :-) Tried an early morning run - well 8am :-)

Well done on your run today - yes, it was lovely conditions for running and hardly any wind - always a bonus :-)

Hmm... my calves ache when I have just returned from my runs not during them. Do you do plenty of stretching before and after?

None before and ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ I am not good at doing them afterwards....maybe I have to start building that into my routine now I'm a serious runner ๐Ÿ˜‚

Well done on getting out for an early one when I did mine it was about 14ยฐ so lovely and cool. Your calves will eventually stop aching even mine do sometimes but it soon wears off. Enjoy yourself on Sunday you're getting there.

Thanks you graduate you ๐Ÿ˜„!! I do find they get better the longer i run and when I stop and walk they really kick in so maybe continuous running will help but I'll wait until Laura says I can do that - she's in charge ๐Ÿ˜„

My bugbear too. You're not alone :( My calves always seem to ache, to a greater or lesser degree but it has improved week on week, so I'm hopeful going forward. Is it the bottom or the top of your calves? I found the top of my calves felt like they were going to explode or they were on fire for the first 2 or 3 weeks and then it kind of migrated downwards. I found a little cheat useful around week 6/7 and that was when the pain got really uncomfortable, I ran (just 10 or 20 steps) on my tiptoes (which hurts a bit by the way) but after those few steps on my toes, the muscle had eased and I could continue. Sometimes I would do this 3 or 4 times throughout the run. It must be getting better as I haven't had to do it anywhere near as much over the last few runs. The foam roller helped as well I think and my last resort (my best buddy actually) Voltarol Ibuprofen gel :) Good luck for Sunday. Will be thinking of you :)

Ohh Good tip on the tippy toes thing. I'll try that and also the gel - hadn't thought of that. Still partying Graduate McFitty ? ๐Ÿ˜„

I seemed to fix my aches with the gel insoles.

Although they were not so good in my hiking boots yesterday - the ache came back a little bit overnight so today I ran in my long compression socks (first pair I bought from Aldi) rather than my short socks. Anyway, it seemed to do the trick.

The problem with the hiking boots is I think that whereas the size 3-5 fitted straight into my running shoes the boots are size six so had to cut down a 6-9 and on one side at the front of one boot it was not quite right. I have trimmed it so will try it out tomorrow. I am not so impressed with having to cut them to size to be honest as it seems to me the proportions are wrong - you trim the front and sides which leaves the forward gel pad nearer to the toes than the ones that fit out of the box.

More good tips - hadn't thought about compression socks although did buy compression pants for hubby!! That's probably too much information! Thanks!

I only bought the compression socks to start with because they were next to the running shoes in Aldi. But they are comfortable so I bought another pair. The shorter socks are cooler but I seem to be a bit superstitious now. Slightest doubt about any niggly pains and I wear them.

Brilliant - thanks :-) Convinced me - I'll give them a go

Definitely give the compression socks a go and definitely make sure you stretch after each run. I always do the stretches recommended in the pinned posts after each run. They don't take long but seem to do the trick. Why not give them a go! Good luck :)

Well done Kate!! You should try a foam roller if you haven't already. I also stretch between the warm up walk and the run which seemed to make a difference to my calves aching.

Well done - it's going well and all about consolidation now. Stretching afterwards really does help with muscle aches. Best to establish it as part of your regular routine.

Think you are right - if I start now it will become routine - thanks :-)

After my early week muscle pains I always stretch now. As you say just becomes part of the routine. My dogs love it when I lay on the floor to stretch my back ๐Ÿ˜€

lightweightkate profile image
lightweightkateGraduateโ€ข in reply toOldPossum

I wil do this probably whilst being covered in licks from my dog who thinks anyones game at his height :-)

At least one of them has stopped trying to sit in me - black labs are not lap dogs ๐Ÿ˜€

Well done Kate, glad you enjoyed the 'early' morning, mine got earlier and earlier as the weeks went by. Mostly encouraged by reading MichaelH070862 never get quite as early as him though!

Good luck for your next run, may your calves behave!
