For those that like their data, here are my splits for my various outdoor 5k runs this year - it's the same route everytime. As you can see , cracking km #4 (and improving #3) are key.

Nice work, John - both on the graphs and the PB. Now I have cracked the sub-30minute 5K, I'm hoping to get down to 25 minutes one day (could be a very long way off!).

Thats very attractive but I am a bit thick, what is it saying??
Haha! Oh Juicy, you make me smile You're NOT thick - maybe maths isn't a strong point...
OK, let's do this s-l-o-w-l-y :-).
Left-hand graph: there are 2 different types data here. The thick orange line is my overall time for 8 different 5k runs, labelled "run 5" to "run 12" - and the time is read off the right hand side vertical ('y') axis (the "finish time").
Now the coloured bars. For each run, I've simply plotted as a bar, my 1 km split times during the run. So their are 5 coloured bars for each run. The "run 12" km splits are:
1 - 4:35 - blue bar
2 - 4:45 - red bar
3 - 4:32 - green bar
4 - 4:56 - purple bar (ouch)
5 - 4:43 - light blue bar.
Same colours for each run.
So I can see with each run, how they've compared and where I've gained/lost time. This only works if I'm running the exact same route each time.
Right-hand graph: again, I've taken those split times for all 7 runs and plotted them against each kilometer. Now instead of looking at a run as whole (say coloured 5 bars) I can now easily see how the 1st kilometer time varies, the 2nd kilometer time varies and so on. And you can clearly see that kilometer #4 is tricky for me!
Does that all make sense?
John
