about the recurring cold type symptoms I've been having, he thinks it's my body reacting to running - hmmm only took it 10 months then? He gave me anti-histamines and a steroid nasal spray.
He mentioned that he does " a bit" of running, so I got him to look at my foot lump... funny place for a bunion he said, presumably not wanting to completely bad-mouth the other doctor, but he had no idea what it was....not much use really...

Hmmm doc's !! whilst they do a marvellous job under extreme stress I am sure , they can be right T*ssers
Speaking from personal experience sorry ..
Hopefully your lump is improving Curly ? How is it going with the mizuno's? good I hope
he said it "might be" but he didn't know what it was... useless!
There was an item about this on Radio 2's Jeremy Vine show yesterday. Unfortunately I was only partially listening so can't tell you what they said but it may be worth a quick listen again on iPlayer (I think it was an hour into the show).
*Edited to say that the item was about recurring cold symptoms not strangely located bunions
Not much help at all. English doc? New washing powder / animal - presumably not. Could be a stress thing but given that presumably you're not under stress (in any guise, ie physical / running as well as anything else) then as you say, Not much help. Too much winter?!
I think that's what I'm going to have to do. Managed my first run for nearly 3 weeks today - 3 x 5mins. Very very happy to have moved my enormous a**e at last. Tired now, but feeling happier
Just throwing some ideas out there. What if you upped one or the other but at half the rate you've been trying? Give your body a little extra time to adjust? Are you upping all of your runs in a week or just one? Maybe you need a really short relaxing run after a longer session.
It happens to me too. I now take it as a sign to cut back on how hard I'm pushing myself in my running. The immune system is a treacherous thing. You have to mollycoddle it. You can buy 'immune support supplements" but I don't have much faith in them. Just eat well, try to be happy and listen to your body. (on re-reading that it sounds as vague and unhelpful as a newspaper horoscope for today, but maybe a virtual hug will help?)
You could be right there MW, I went out today regardless, it was "fresh" to say the least! I felt better for it actually.
I've tried all the medications recommended for me by the doc and the pharmacist, nose unblocker, anti- histamine etc...nothing has worked and I hate taking them... I think I'll just ignore it now and get on with it...
I guess it could be, but it looks a bit high up the foot for that... you'd think 2 docs would have some idea between them wouldn't you...I think I'll see the doctor in France when I get back, you have to pay but they are much better...
Ive had an itchy eye for a coupla days and had snuffles for a while now . I take an allergy tablet every day . No sore throat though or anything like that.
I have been hit with a cold for the second time in a month while on the injury couch with this lepto business - I am firmly convinced it is my body reacting to NOT running. In all the months since I started runnig I have not fallen victim to any bug or lurgy doing the rounds, even as my wife and kids succumb, and despite taxing myself quite heavily and getting cold and wet quite often and so on. I ascribe my usual rude health to the twin prophylactics of having a strong immune system from all the running and getting good doses of fresh air deep in my lungs every day doing it. I am certain that the weariness, weakness and susceptibility to every passing virus I have been suffering since I got ill is as much, if not more, to do with my system being bereft of its normal strengthening than it is the illness itself. It is my contention that, rather than mollycoddling, the immune system needs a damn good kick up the pants. Doctors, I suspect, would rather we just dosed ourselvs up and wrapped ourselves in cotton wool because they are too overworked to be able to properly get to the bottom of what ails us.
To a point Lord Copper But the adverse effect of over-training on the immune system is scientifically documented. The trouble is that everyone's bench mark for 'over-training' is different. In my case last year, three 10 K runs in a month followed by a long-haul flight followed by a 5K hill run three days after landing when I already felt ill was over-stepping my bench mark and I paid for it by succumbing to flu so badly I ended up in hospital even though the same bug had just laid the other house residents low for just a few days. Six months later I am only just halfway to getting my fitness back. Your immune system really isn't a case of mind over matter. It will bounce back if you heed the warning signs but you may be knocked out for months if you 'kick it up the pants' as I did. Not just my anecdotal evidence. It really is an accepted tenet of sports medicine. All to do with your adrenal glands I believe.
Yes, despite my slight flippancy, I was not disputing that over training can lay us low or the need for proper rest and recovery - I do recognise that, and have even been following it, if grudgingly. My point was that as system used to being in regular motion will be prone to falling fruther into disrepair if brought to a total stop for a period of time. There is a fine line I suspect, and it is the ability to heed and interpret what the body is telling us that is the key.
Truly I don't think I am over training, I'm not new to exercise, only new to running. I've always worked out hard, did body building in my younger years...my last regular exercise was swimming - 3 times a week, about 2K per visit...
Do you think you might need to see someone else??? I really hate it when they look at something and say they've no idea what it is but then don't even bother to suggest how you might find out! Grrr!
Definitely see someone else CG! Second opinion called for. Looks completely in the wrong place for a bunion to me too and believe me I have seen some bunions!
I feel for you as all you want is an answer. I have no idea about lumps and bumps but is worth going to see a specialist just so you can get an answer.
Thanks all! I went for a run today and felt better for it, although the snotty snuffly nose came back within a couple of hours... I think I'll see the doc in France when I get back there in a few weeks, they are generally much better than docs here in UK and don't hustle you out of the surgery after 10 minutes..
