I started c25k in April. Today, 31/2 months later, I jogged 10.4 k - my longest by 2k. I think what’s happened is that the program destroyed my inbuilt resistance and negative voice. I carried on after graduation, reached 5k and have continued with that 3x weekly, sometimes going faster, sometimes going further, sometimes not. Whereas previously I had no pace which was both “running” and “comfortable”, I now have enough fitness to have found this. It surely is not fast! In fact it’s absurdly slow - but I’ve stopped being so hard on myself, so that’s ok. I’m just pleased to be able to jog along miles of tracks across beautiful open heathland, up a bit, down a bit, straight thru streams, puddles, mud…and now that I have, maybe I can even start to speed it up a little…the same as with the 5 k before. I’m feeling very positive and hope this is encouraging to others on this journey from absolute 0.
First 10k ever: I started c25k in April. Today... - Bridge to 10K
First 10k ever
An amazing achievement 🥳👏🎉👏
Thank you. Trying to accept that running that slowly still counts. Slow and long (for me) does at least mean I’m exercising for more minutes! 3 times longer in time than one of my faster 5ks, which has got to be a good thing…?
Definitely a good thing, I've run a few 10k's now and they do take more than twice the time of a 5k. I ran 10 miles one day in June and just sat grinning at all the calories I'd burned that run. Doesn't matter how slow you go, running is running, I get disheartened at times that I can't run faster, and have to remind myself that I'm running and that's all that matters.
There's a post for a badge if you can find it, let admins know and you'll get Graduate10 by your name.

10K is my favourite distance - challenging but more than do-able! Doing my first one made me really feel I am a runner (also a slow one!!!)
I started from absolute 0 about 3 years ago and eventually found my ‘comfortable’ pace. It’s not fast but it’s an enjoyable pace that lets me go the distance. I never thought I’d say that I could comfortably run a 5k 😲 but now it’s my default run when I can’t manage or be bothered to do anything else. I’m just doing a 5k today I’ll say. Just! How did that happen 😲 Congratulations on your first 10k 🥳.
fantastic! It’s wonderful isn’t it that our new-found skill can open up such possibilities for fun, sightseeing and exercise. All on the back of a free programme. It’s like being born again 😀
“Absurdly slow” is just fine. We build strength as we go, and if we take care not to overdo things, can avoid time on the injury couch.
Have fun out there 😀👍
Congratulations on your first 10k! It’s a great distance, especially when you can ramble around the trails and enjoy the beautiful countryside!🙂
