Having completed my first 10k on Sunday, I went out for a short run yesterday but soon as I started to run I was aching .. how long should I give myself a rest before starting again ?

Congratulations on your 10k it's a great feeling to achieve that distance isn't it?

We' re are all different so I think you have to just listen to your body. I've always given myself at least 2 days between runs, and I only run twice a week so sometimes it can be 4.I know that doesn't really help you but trust your instincts.

Whoop whoop and congratulations for your first 10K, always a special and memorable run 💪

It’s natural to ache after running a new distance. Your body has to get used to the distance and the more you do it the lesser the aches. Did you stretch after your 10K? Where exactly are you aching? And is it an ache or pain? It’s natural that you might feel a bit sore after your first run at a new distance and this will ease in time the more you do them and your body gets used to the extra mileage.

Maybe try a little walk to warm up the muscles and then do some gentle stretching and walking around and see how you feel. If you have to take a few extra rest days then that’s fine. If you don’t already do yoga or Pilates then you might want to consider starting now. Both are great for stretching out our muscles and are great complements to our running.

Thanks for your reply I’ll take it on board ! Not pain just achy legs once I started to run but I pushed through it wasn’t that bad .. I’ve had a day off today just a brisk 2 mile walk and il try a run tmro! Yes to the stretches as I always do a warm up walk

Well done and I'm not surprised you felt tired. I remember my first 10k and I was pretty tired too. I left it 3 days before I ran again and just did a short run. You'll be fine, it just takes a bit of getting used to.

Congratulations on your first 10k De48 !

Forget "No pain no gain" though, that went out decades ago. I understand that the person who first created C25K was in favour of "No pain, no pain."

Congratulations on your first 10K . You might need a couple of rest days until you get used to the 10k distance, and it’s good to consolidate there for a few weeks before moving on to longer distances.

These are some useful stretches to do after a run on this link. nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/h...
