As I continue on my virtual/real mashup of my own personal running journey, from LEJOG, to COGH and ZOMBIES and a future EMF, something miraculous happened this week!
Every morning of this week we heard at 5am the door shut downstairs, and then our 17 year old lanky son taking a shower..... but why??????? πΆπΌπΆπΌπΆπΌ
Guess what! ππππππ
He started running! ππππππππΎππ½ Beginning of this week he sneaks out the moment it gets light, and runs ca 3.5k!
He, the teenager that I tried to encourage to run using Zombies, Run with me ending up getting hooked as Runner 5!
He, the teenager that I tried to encourage to run with my husband back a year ago, but then I ended up becoming the runner of the family, with husband nursing calf injuries and son caring more for his online gaming community.
C25k app was too uncool, NRC not his thing!
But now he sneaks out every morning, runs my old C25k route and comes back for a shower before heading to school. And ... in the evening he is so tired he goes to sleep at a reasonable time!
We dare not tell him to only run on alternate days, as he definitely is a person now that finds his own way and doesnβt want to be told.
But WOW! Iβm sure having two running parents helped to think this as a possibility!
Weβll see if he catches the running bug, Iβm sure he runs too fast and without recovery days. But hopefully heβll figure everything out and keeps on keeping on!
Wish me and him luck in catching the running bug!

WOWEE That's amazing! I can imagine you feel it's best not to say anything in case he stops as uncool or anything! And getting up early to do it too... wow
Wow, what a turn up for you with him off out and running. Iβm sure his young body can well cope with running every day. You should be very proud of him. Iβm also doing the EMF virtual 10k, first ever official race for me, quite excited. πππ for your son.
ππππ½ππ½π I fear I chickened out on the 10k and chose the 5k, as I am only now working my way up to 10k again. But I really wanted the feeling of a real race. But even if we start at the same time I probably will be finishing after you finish your 10k! πππ½ββοΈπππ½ββοΈπππ
πππyeah, he does now. We caught him, but just said βGreat stuffβ! And I think he is actually really proud. While heading upstairs after my own run I heard him say to my husband that he felt much faster this morning... πππ
It would be so nice if we become a family of runners! And of course my imagination goes overboard and I already see us all heading to RunFest runfestrun.co.uk
Brilliant your brilliant achievements have secretly rubbed off on him , see what u have achieved has given him motivation not that he'll ever admit that π
Wowee I have a son the same age and cannot as yet imagine him voluntarily getting up at 5!!! That is really amazing that he finally has a running bug!! Congratulations on successfully passing it on π€
I do envy you None of my lot have even the least interest in running, and on top pf that the lazy sodd wouldn't even get up a bit early two Thanksgivings ago to be at the Finish Line for me. But - they have been known to tell their friends that "Dad ran a Marathon"
Well, weβll see how long it lasts. At least he knows from his motherβs example that anyone can do it and that if he needs to, he can always resort to C25k.
And teenagers being proud of their parents is an achievement all by itself! ππππ½π
What is the world coming to?? What a great influence youβve been π I wouldnβt worry too much about alternate days, recovery days etc. When a friend and I ran in our early 20βs we hadnβt heard of any of that and we ran 6 days a week with no problems, obviously rest days are really important but the young heal quicker
Yeah... will do! He asked yesterday evening why his legs ached, so we had that βstretching talkβ π
Zombies, Run : itβs a running app with full tracking capabilities but also with telling a story about running that unfolds as you run! You can also play your music in the background. So like an immersive movie while running with tracking your runs as well! I like it. There is a free version.
Thatβs absolutely brilliant, marvellous role modelling ππ€
He will probably be grand running consecutive days at that age. He'll find his own rhythm. Just make sure he is listening to his own body and takes it easy when it is telling him to. He is probably already going pretty quick!
Wow! I so loved reading your post - it so struck a chord with me - you give me hope for my own lanky 15 year old π. He is the reason I started C25K (I was desperate to be able to keep up with his long legs on family hikes), in fact we did it together - but as the months went by I was the one who became the runner while he grumbled his way back to the gaming couch as soon as the weather got cold π (sensible warm running kit that we bought for him is apparently so uncool!) Imagine my surprise when he announced that he was going to give C25K another try as part of his DofE challenge - he even said I was his hero π when I headed out for a run in the rain the other day!!Will it stick? He is currently on the IC with a broken nose from playing cricket π±...but maybe if I keep quiet and wait patiently I will see him haring around the fields again, far too fast in his jeans π and thick cotton hoodie π , ignoring all my good advice, but becoming a runner..in his own way π€π€π€π
I donβt think thatβs going to happen. Give it another 10years, though. Heβll have gotten over his βparents are un-coolβ phase and I will have gotten to be such a cool-fit oldie Iβll be able to keep up with him!
