I fell but I finished first 10K

I ran my first 10K at 57 after being in a wheelchair two years ago due to a head on collision at 55 mph. I have three metal plates and 15 screws in my lower leg and ankle. I have a repaired ACL on same leg. I never ran before the collision. Truly. Anything is possible, running friends! I’m slow and I even fell between mile 5 and 6, in front of people. But I got up, dusted off my dignity and got to 6.2 miles (er, 10K). THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR INSPIRING POSTS!!

Brilliant effort, what a journey you’ve had since your accident, well done. Happy running 🤗

Congratulations! You should feel very proud! I’m right behind you at 56, and have had issues with my ankle for a few years as well. NOTHING like what you’ve been through! But ongoing pain, X-rays, MRIs and months of physical therapy. None of it helped so I just gave in to it and I run anyway.

Love the pic! Congrats again!

Unlike you and despite having my ankle and both tibia and fibula crushed as opposed to clean breaks, my ankle doesn’t hurt (at least it doesn’t hurt yet). I’m sorry you have so much pain. Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

A fantastic achievement and coming back from your accident trauma and injuries to reach 10k is incredibly inspiring. I’m also a fellow ACL replacement and repair runner, I feel ya on that aspect. Some days the knee does good, other days the recovery is not so good but I’m working on it and am a work in progress! Hoping to get to the same 10k soon, currently at just over 7km.. almost within my grasp. Well done on your run 💪🏼💪🏼

I’m behind you all the way. I must say that I do not run when the knees don’t feel good. It’s as if my good knee is now my bad knee. I’ve made big strides in distance after taking time to let the knees feel better - even after 2 or 3 weeks. I have not noticed a huge decline in my fitness even after that amount of time. Good luck. Take it slow to ensure you run well into your later years!!

Thank you. I provided commitment but medical and sports experts and a truly wonderful hubby got me out of the wheelchair. So many don’t get those advantages.

I just read it too, it’s amazing that you turned a horrible situation into a positive one! I hope, should anything happen to me, that I have even half the strength of character and determination that you have! And well done on your 10k 👍🏻

Your profile is an inspiring read. Getting to where you are now is incredible, I see that you credit your husband, health care etc, but none of that would have made a difference without your persistence and determination.

An amazing story - congratulations!! Getting up after a fall is tricky too - I’ve done it and you start running again before you know if you’ve done any damage! 😳 Hope you’ve not discovered sore bits once the adrenaline wore off.

Very inspiring post. Thank you so much for sharing. I also have plate and screws in my leg. I got back into running at the start of this year then fell & broke my wrist. (Up again...) I was just l getting into 10k running when I fell last Thursday and have badly hurt my elbow. I was feeling a bit " fed up " until I read your post...I will dust myself down and hit the road hopefully by January 2021. Onwards and upwards. 🤸🏼‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

SortofrunningGraduate10 in reply to Nilsam

I’m so sorry, Nilsam! That just sucks! I do worry about falling and re-injuring myself, especially the leg but then I realize it is reinforced with metal. It’s the rest of us that is vulnerable, as you’ve demonstrated! I must say that my broken wrist after my accident took forever to heal. It is why I was in a wheelchair for so long. Docs said older bones don’t heal as fast as young bones. Remember, if you take off time from running, it isn’t anything to feel shame over. I have to put running in rotation in my exercise routine. I simply can’t run every week and certainly can’t do it 4 x a week. So...weight lifting, rowing, yoga all have a place. Good luck and I hope you will allow yourself time to heal!!

Thank you so much. Sortofrunning. You are right about older bones too. I had signed up to do RED January. Originally run every day but now exercise every day of January. You are right...running can be just part of the programme.
