Snow Day!

Well, I'm glad I ran Saturday night. My husband and I went out late last night to clear snow while the blizzard was still going strong. We were unable to clear it as fast as it accumulated so we called it a night. We woke up to a wall of snow today and you can't even tell we cleared anything. Schools are closed (which is unheard of here! Busses may not run but the schools are always open), I got a text that we can't get into the parking lot at my clinic so I'll be late getting to work. Hubby is out clearing snow early this morning with the snowblower so I can get my car out when we get the call that the clinic is open. I've heard a couple snowmobiles go ripping down the street. I'm amazed my husband hasn't followed them yet 😂

Tonight was supposed to be a run day. I'm thinking it will be a snowshoe day instead, but I can't wait for the sidewalks to be cleared and get out for a nice slow snowy run 😊

It really is very pretty, especially if you can stay home and don't need to drive anywhere.

Looks beautiful Sask! I like running on freshly laid snow...not as deep as that though! I have some shoe spikes which were sent to me as a present from Ontario. Might give them a try this winter. I am always impressed by how well prepared Canadians are for bad weather, power cuts, floods etc; a really can do nation.

Running in snow is hard work but very enjoyable. I'll be digging out my cleats for my next run! I'm sure I'll struggle with keeping my HR in zone 2 and 3.

They were predicting this so we were well prepared. We have our municipal election today and I voted during the advanced vote on Thursday - a lot of people had the same idea and it was busy. The polls may be a little quiet today but it is a fairly heated election so tough to say (not as heated as the American federal election 😆)

Oh my goodness! So lovely to see. Is it the first snowfall this winter?

We would be completely blind-sided if we had a snowfall like that in southern England; everything would grind to a halt. You guys are set up for that kind of weather and seem to just take it all in your stride.

Not sure what it would be like to run on though 😬 ?!

This is actually our second snowfall. The first one was last month and didn't stick around. I'm thinking this one is here to stay 😆. Running in it is quite fun. You warm up quickly and it is an amazing leg workout. I'm sure it is similar to running in soft sand. There is no PB's though. My next run will be a short slow one, I'm sure.

That looks beautiful, though I fully appreciate that it's not practical :)

The snowmobilers are happy but getting around for everyday life will be a challenge for the next few days until all the snow gets cleared from the roadways. And unfortunately the hospitals will be busy due to slips, falls, and heart attacks from the hard work of shovelling snow. Our neighbour is elderly so we clear her driveway. The snow is over 5 feet in spots so she won't be getting out any time soon, our other neighbour is trying to get a skid steer so he can clear her driveway and his and some of our road since we are one of the last areas to get cleared. But it is so peaceful and beautiful. I've just enjoyed a nice cup of tea while staring out at it.

That all sounds pretty amazing.

I live in a tiny hamlet in rural France, so when we get proper snow the local farmers come up with their tractors to clear it. And yes, we - particularly my husband - clear for our elderly neighbours too.

I don't always get to work though, as it's more than 45km away over a 1100m mountain pass. It's a main road, but all it takes is a couple of vehicles without snow tyres, or for an over-ambitious trucker to jack-knife, and it gets blocked and/or officially closed!

Wow! What a wonderful picture. Probably not so great if you've actually got to get somewhere though!

I don't think we'd cope too well in the UK with that amount of snow 🌨

Running in it sounds incredible, so do you use spikes? I worry if the pavement looks frosty so I think I'd be getting a treadmill 🤣😂

Is it really cold as well? If so I guess it'll be around for a while yet.

The first snowfall is always interesting and a huge rush to get snowtires put on. Fortunately this is our second major snow of the season and my hubby was well prepared and had our snowtires on before the first snowfall this year. It is quite cold this morning (-14°C) and supposed to,stay cold all week so it is here to stay!

I have 2 different type of cleats - yaktrax that are quite worn from last year that has spikes and coils and then a cheap pair from Costco that just has short little spikes on it. They both work pretty well. The coils are nice for thicker snow.

Funny thing... I have a treadmill but avoid it as much as possible, I walked on it last night because the snow was blowing so hard, going for my evening walk was too treacherous. It is nice to have though and I use it when I must.

Obviously preparation is the key thing. We had a few snowy (for us) winters a a few years ago and everyone started talking about needing snow tyres.

That year I actually bought some yaktrax and they were brilliant for walking on packed down snow / ice.

A few years ago I had a neighbour who was from Canada (not sure what part) and she said that she felt colder in the UK when it was 4 degrees that when it was well below zero back home, something to do with damp rather than dry cold apparently!!

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to

That is so true! I’m on the prairies where it gets really cold but it is very dry so as long as you dress for it in the proper layers it is fine. I grew up on the west coast and when I was last home in the winter for a short visit, I was so cold but that damp cold feels like it gets right into your bones. Regardless, it is all about proper layering and being prepared for the weather. We can acclimate to anything.

Winter wonderland, it's winter now in Ireland as well as Canada, I live in Scotland but don't consider winter begins until December 1st, apart from a few frosts the weather has been more Autumn than winter, I hope you are enjoying your running 🏃🏾 in the 🌨 snow

I really quite enjoy snowy winter running so I’m looking forward to my next run.

Wow, isn’t that pretty early in the season even for you Sask? Proper snow. 😍

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

This would be typical but our last few years have been quite dry. It has been a long time since we've gotten snow like this around here!

Wow, now that is a covering of snow, I'm a bit jealous. It would make me feel very festive (and it's only November, ah well!).

I hope you manage to get out soon and that you stay safe and warm.

There is a Christmas song called 'Walking in a Winter Wonderland' of course for you that should be "RUNNING in a Winter Wonderland"

A few years ago I changed Christmas song titles suitable for running, it's a bit early to repeat those titles just now, I may do that nearer Christmas.

I remember that. I look forward to that again!

At the end of February and for a few days at the beginning of March 2018, there was a very cold spell in the UK, we called that cold spell, "the beast from the east" caused by very cold winds blowing all the way from Russia, heavy snow lasted for several days with all schools and transport stopped, visibility during some of the snow showers was reduced to almost zero as if it was a fog, all parkruns except one at Perth Scotland were cancelled, this was about 7 weeks before I began C25K.

I remember that. Oldfloss shared a poem she made about it.

That snow and beautiful sky looks perfect. You Canadian’s get nicer snow conditions and cope with them so much better than we do in Scotland. Happy running when you have clear routes🤗

I remember many years ago a Canadian man telling me that some Canadians get fed up with snow the way we in the UK get fed up with the rain.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to AlMorr

Yes i heard that too

Great news today W&S, they think that scientists have developed a vaccine that is 90% accurate in stopping Covid-19, just hope it works for everyone.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to AlMorr

It would be so good, we have a member of staff with it so testing everyone weekly and hoping all our masks gloves and aprons have been enough to stop the spread it’s a scary time because the people we work with are very vulnerable

WOW that is quite a snowfall, it does look pretty, now that the blizzard is over.

I expect you will have to drive to work if the clinic is able to open, to provide emergency and necessary treatments. 🐕🐈Do take care. x

It sounds really cold too, but you have all the gear for these conditions, so I hope you are able to get out and enjoy either a run or snowshoe shuffle...

I suppose the novelty of snow-angels and building a snowman have long worn off. I did used to enjoy watching my Retriever playing and rolling in the snow!

Will look out for your report.

My technician notified me that my surgery patients had manage to arrive this morning so I had my husband drive me in our truck once he finished snow blowing. Most of our appointments have cancelled so far though since we still can’t get into the parking lot and have to trudge through thigh deep snow to get to the building. I’m suspecting I might need to cover call tonight for the vet who was supposed to be on so I may not get that run in until later this week now. Boohoo! Oh well. Something to look forward to.

I do enjoy a good snow angel. I was disappointed when I moved here and found the snow often doesn’t make great snowmen because it is so fine and dry. But I’m thinking we will need to try again! A lot of the dogs are sure enjoying it but we got a picture from one of our techs who is home having to dig their cows out of the snow that are still on pasture - not great 😢

Just amazing to see that much snow ❄️ and in November too and it’s your 2nd lot. Thank you for sharing not only the photo but what goes on your feet too, not that we have much snow here, but you have set me thinking what if more came down than normal, what would I do. Your preparation and good neighbourliness are a credit. Fantastic spirit all round. Enjoy your winter runs❄️❄️❄️👏👍😊
