A big thank you to Ju Ju for her Magic Plan and to everyone who posts here – together you have inspired me to run and to keep on running even when it is hot and humid or when I’ve been feeling lazy.
This morning I set out to do 9k and felt so relaxed and comfortable that I did the extra kilometre.
It’s been a bit of a bumpy journey for me. I first did C25K in 2017, and I guess like too many others got a bit carried away with trying to go faster – I got to 5K in 29 minutes a couple of weeks after graduating and started to do a lot of speed work. Three weeks later I tore my achilles tendon and that was me out of action for several months. I started again a year later, thinking that it would be interesting to treat the early weeks of C25K as interval training. Just after graduating bang went my left knee. Finally this time around the penny dropped – I’ve worked hard at slowing down, making my runs as easy and comfortable as I can. Once I’ve got the endurance up I may think about working on speed but for the moment it is all about finding a pace that’s fun to maintain. I did three solid weeks of consolidation before starting the Magic Plan and have really enjoyed completing it. There have been no injuries, not even a twinge and I feel I have finally learned just how relaxing a great run can be.

What a helpfully reflective post. A great achievement for you after everything that’s happened, and I am sure it’s all the sweeter for it. Well done. 😊
That's great news! Having suffered a recent injury (not as bad as yours I guess), it would have been so easy to give up! Well done for your perseverance! Sub 30 min 5ks can wait, just run happily and comfortably! It will be ages until I get to 10k, but running for an hour is enough for me just now. Best to run with joy injury free. After all, I don't suppose any of us are going to break any major records! Take care and enjoy your runs.
Great post NickMG! Glad to hear you are back running comfortably and up to 10K - that's fab! 🙂
Also, thank you for your very honest tale from the injury couch - it really does take time to build up those running legs, which is why Consolidation and an element of caution is promoted here! I think I read that speedwork in particular, is one of the main causes of injury in new runners - and we are all guilty of wanting to go a bit faster, I think!
Slow and steady perhaps, really is the way to go!🐢 🙂
