Good morning! I finally completed my first 10k today and overcome the demons. I still find it very difficult to overcome the negative thoughts and worry I won’t be able to do it! I often sleep very badly before a morning run.
Thankfully this morning was lovely, sunny and cool so I pushed through and thoroughly enjoyed it. Strangely, I felt I really got into my stride from 6km onwards.
A quick couple of questions if you have time. I run before work early in the morning so drink a large glass of water and then leave. If I want to gradually increase distance do I need to eat before running or can I bring some raisins with me? Also, I don’t carry water whilst running, is there a certain distance/duration that it is advisable I should carry some?
Thanks so much for the support and inspiration. I genuinely think I would have given up if it wasn’t for this forum.

Wow! What a super run and time too. Take lots of confidence from this. 10k is a milestone distance. 🏆
I'm not very experienced myself really but have run a HM in the morning with no water or food before. It is advisable to take a bit of water if you're running over an hour and a half I think but everyone is different. Raisins sound good. Jelly Babies and Haribos are also useful. I personally wouldn't have anything for 10k before the run. You could leave your longer run force weekend though now and have a tea/coffee/juice and some carbs then wait an hour and a bit then go out. Stay hydrated every day too. Well done again!
Congratulations what a cracking time for your 1st 10k. I always run 1st thing after just tea and water. I've recently been increasing my distance and have ½ or whole banana just as I leave the house. I also take a few jelly babies in phone holder as a just in case. 1st time I needed them was a couple of weeks ago running just over 14k. In other words I find I'm good without food up to about 1hr 20 but further need a boost. Doing 10 miles soon which for me will be just under 2 hrs so I'll probably run late morning and have porridge/fruit for breakfast. The key is to know and trust your body. Happy running 🤗
Huge congratulations on your first 10k, it is a fantastic achievement, well done.
I would say to experiment, I don't tend to eat before a run or take water with me but I've only got up to 12k myself so far. I do take jelly babies or a gel with me on 10k plus runs though, just to give me an energy boost.
Like everyone else says, stay hydrated every day, not just on run days and I would also suggest you consolidate the 10k distance before increasing, a bit like you did for the 5k/30 mins.
