I woke up thus morning intending to do 8.5/9km; and was feeling good about it! The weather was sunny but not too hot (yet), so I started looking on the NRC for some guided runs, as I wanted some company this morning. I found the ‘1 hour run’ with Coach Bennet and as I liked his so much last time I wanted to try this one.
Previously my longest run was 50 minutes, so I told myself to aim for 45 minutes, and see where I ended up. I also decided to go really slow in the beginning, because if not I wear myself out too quickly. And i managed it!! I ran across the river, along the water to my favourite park in the city, all in the park, and then back over the bridge and home My goal throughout was to breath only through my nose ie so I wasn’t out of breath and this also helped with pacing and speed a lot. I also turned off any Audio announcements and made myself promise I wouldn’t look at my distance - so I had no clear idea of how far I ran! When the 60 minutes was up I looked at my phone at 9.6km!! I had to go the next 400m; and was also feeling good for this
Afterwards I foam rolled (self care but OUCH), stretched, and made such a nice breakfast with hummus, tempeh, veg 😍
I think I’m going to consolidate my 10km running / just listen to my body these next few weeks - mostly on shorter runs! Overall I’m very proud of myself

What a fabulous achievement and a really good time too! Excellent run. I like the way you describe taking it slow and breathing through your nose. You had a really positive mindset going out. I am a big believer in seeing how you feel on the day. Brilliant! I hope you are buzzing 😊
Wow! I love the way you approached this run! Listening to how you feel and pressing on when you're in the mood is the best! Well done. You must be buzzing!
Proud? Of course you’re proud - and so you should be! It’s a fantastic achievement, all the more so because a) it wasn’t planned for today and b) it was your first one! So woohoo, go you!! 🥳🥳
I think all of my “first “ runs at a particular milestone distance have had that “I feel right so I will go for it” element, and that feeling has never been wrong. Your pace on a first 10k is amazing!!! 👏👏👏👏
Don't worry - you will get there - stay positive, take each one as it comes and try not to miss too many days if you just don't fancy it - usually its OK once you get started. Also don't fixate on times or distances - most of the time these days I do 8k - no particular reason except it just feels about right to me - not too short and not too long, as per time - if I want to have a blast and am up to it I will give it a go but I rarely plan for it - in fact most of the times I guess I might do well I do terrible!
thanks! yes i don't think I could have run for 60 minutes without some interaction / brain stimulus so taking him along definitely helped! he also reminds me to slow down
You go girl! 10k? Sorted! In the sun? What’s that? Not seen any of that in Scotland recently. Enjoy the moment...you so deserve it! 10k is just epic. 👏👏👏
Congratulations on your first 10k - it's a great feeling! Im working (slowly) towards 10 miles & finding it a bit of a slog just now if I'm honest, but posts like yours are inspiring.
thank you! oh wow 10 miles is huge! ahhh I've also felt uninspired sometimes... I think we all do! are you on a plan? for me JuJu's plan helped so much - even if i didn't stick to it!
I'm doing the Bupa beginner 10 mile plan. It's 12 weeks, but I started from week 5 because I'd already done a few 10ks by then, and I'm now into week 8. I think I'll get there eventually, but my running mojo is definitely hiding just now! When I did 10k I did use the magic plan, but also mixed in a 10k training app. Both together worked really well for me.
