I named my run today '30 minutes of Social Distancing'.
I saw not one other soul (or sole). Unless you count the guys building the new water pipeline from Thirlmere to Maryport who waved from 50 meters. They are great guys, and watching their slow progress has been a theme of my runs since 2018. It's been going so long that even GoogleMaps has caught up. My run is from Chapel down the road towards the lake, right steep up to the farm, back down and along the road parallel to the pipeline, and back down a green lane. You might just work it out from the satellite image.
Second run in shorts this year - and probably one too many, it was cold.
Stuff you Coronavirus!

I saw four people on my run in the woods, one dog walker, one other runner and two teens who were not keeping two metres apart but holding hands. True love!
I wish the over 70s near us took “social distancing” so seriously. They still keep popping out to the shops, and going for optician appts etc. I could understand it if they had no other way to get supplies, but we’re trying to get shopping for both our elderly neighbours with ours, and they still want to pop to the shops... I think our UK “guidance” forgets how stubborn and independent many British pensioners are. (Apparently even Boris Johnson’s 79-year-old Dad has said in an interview that he’ll still be going to the pub “if he needs to”...)
I’m just in the “vulnerable group” on heart grounds, but I’m cancelling my own appts and trying to keep my distance from people!
All these descriptions of lovely runs are keeping me going at the moment while I'm on the IC, so thank you theoldfellow. Such a lovely place to run.
My walking distance is improving though, and today we got as far as a regular lovely café, where they produce the most wonderful Portuguese tarts, amongst other lovely cakes. Half his tables were removed to allow more space between customers, and water and cutlery were no longer given communal access, but despite doing all the right things, he is closing today. His customers are mainly retired and he said he doesn't want anyone to catch the virus there. I'm hoping these little independent businesses will survive.
Oh I hope your cafe survives Dexy. Such hard times for small businesses at the moment. ☹️
Nice to hear you’re able to walk further now though. 😀 I did my first run after my HM and pootled around the common this morning with Flossie. Not worth its own post, but it was lovely.
Fantastic TOF! I bet the pipeline guys know you well - you’ve watched each other’s progress! 😀
I told coronavirus where to go this morning too, and went for a pootly 5k on the local common with my dog. Saw a few other dog walkers, but we comically took different trails the moment we spotted each other!
Good for you TOF, from Monday to today I saw 3 runners on Monday when I ran 5k, on Tuesday I also saw 3 running when I was out for a 7K walk, today I walked 7 Kilometres and ran 1, this was on a quiet country road about 15 miles from where I live and did not see any runners, so I took the train to where the walk was.
On the way back on the train there were only 3 people who got off the train at one of the busiest stations in Glasgow, a six Coach electric train going to Edinburgh with only 3 people on it, not exactly over crowding.
It’s got real benefits living in a rural area hasn’t it? I’m still trying to get my parents in Penrith to take it seriously and I think I’m
starting to get through - they have cancelled their National Express tickets to come to see us at Easter! I went out for a post HM jog this afternoon, intending to do 5k, but was so deep in thought I forgot to turn back and ended up doing 8k. Saw a couple of dog walkers, but it was raining! Stay safe 😃
How was your post HM run? I still haven't run since Sunday and I'm tempted to not run until next week because I still have a few niggles. But another part of me wants to get out sooner rather than later and squeeze a run in before the government takes more drastic measures and we can't go out and run! I really hope it doesn't come it!
After my 10 mile race I was advised to go out for short slow leg stretch runs to help the muscles, but I couldn’t rise myself to do more than brisk walking for 5 days. Then parkrun was on. No stopping me then.
I really enjoyed it. Breathing and legs both felt good and I was really zoned out, which is how I managed to go further than planned 😂 I don’t think it will get to the point where we aren’t allowed to leave the house. At least I hope not! I live in a village and run in the country so hardly ever see anybody else.
I had the park to myself for the dog walk today and again two hours later for my run. I did spot two runners on the other side of the park when I first arrived, but by the time I got over there they’d found one of the exits. I ran in summer trousers and a T-shirt... was a bit nippy, trousers kept the legs nice and warm throughout, should have taken the long sleeved top though.
Lovely neck of the woods you’re in there... I see you’re, technically, by the only lake in the Lake District too!
Nice to hear from you TOF. Those of us who have the countryside to run in are really lucky. I have started to walk our Old English up some of the lower slopes of the woodland fringe around the moors as a change from the beach....she is managing, but panting harder than me! I see very few people up there and there is lots of room for us to pass safely but remain within cheery hailing distance. We must be careful to maintain a perspective which isn’t based predominantly on the television coverage! Many happy runs to you. 🙂
Well done TOF - I took advantage today of stopping looking after the grandchildren (boo!) by doing a very pleasant 12k. I did pass quite a few people but decided if I run fast, that I (and they) should be OK!😋
good for you - I'm not seeing anyone on my morning walks - it's like 5:30am on New Year's Day all day long - our village is taking it seriously - it's hard to keep the teenagers in though.
I really feel for all parents now. The closure of schools will make the biggest upheaval of British life in generations. All those parents having to entertain kids 24/7...
I saw one American mailing that suggested teaching them to cook...
I went into the Co-op for some milk and a bottle of tonic, got the last bottle of milk but they’d run out of tonic. Also no Gordon’s on the shelves. The shop assistant said it must be mothers who had just heard the schools are closing 😂😂😂
