Nice little run where normally I wouldn't dare...

Doing my daily exercise run yesterday, I decided to run down the main Keswick to Carlisle route, the A591. It seemed like there was absolutely no traffic, and it's a great surface - but no footpath so usually too dangerous.

Would you believe it? I saw two cars, one in each direction, and they past me and each other at the same place. Dive into hedge!

I may use the light traffic to do a litter-pick later, vehicle drivers are scum at times.

Hope you are all surviving,

Sorry your run was ruined by car drivers, sometimes they can be a nuisance 😁. Enjoy your litter picking. Beautiful part of the country you live in.

Oh, I wouldn't say it was ruined. I still had a good run. And I do realise that the main road is the main road!

Good run for you today along the A591, very little traffic in any road or motorway anywhere in the world, keep safe, don't we miss parkruns at the moment.

What I have been doing on a Saturday at parkrun time is run a "virtual parkrun 5K", this morning I ran my midweek 5K, but it was on my usual off road route.

We have been running a virtual parkrun 5K on Saturdays. Not on a parkrun course though.

Wearing our parkrun apricot t-shirts we walk about 5 minutes to the village, then run 1km to the "Start" of our 5K run down the Goyt Valley and back to the "Finish" at the foot of the hill for our 1k walk back to the village.

I missed out one step in the procedure: wait about 5 minutes for one of our Garmins to connect - the first week mine wouldn't pick up so I set it to Run Indoors for the first kilometre then I was able to get a signal and time the 5k properly. Last Saturday, Geoff's wouldn't connect at first, but we were just about to set off and it was Ready.

By the way, he got a course pb the second time, but I was slightly slower. I did have to step out of the way and wait for three cyclists in order to allow the 2 metre spacing.

And of course we don't have to wait at a pedestrian crossing on a real parkrun :)

I don't and couldn't run at either of the parkruns I go to as we are not allowed by law to travel any distance beyond where you live.

I do notice that every time I run a 5K, that is added to my total distance ran on the Vitality World Running Cup Healthunlocked team page list, although it has been officially postponed the distance in kilometers I run are still being added on.

I could walk to 2 of the 3 nearest parkruns at a pinch. But I don't want to do that, even if I thought it acceptable to do so.

It is better to find somewhere nearer to run

How timely. This just turned up...

I just got that as well Sue, I did workout the other day if I ran a 5K around my garden, it would be 238 times, keep changing direction every so often to avoid getting dizzy, how he could run a marathon is beyond belief.

Sheer determination. Not for me that's for sure

That’s a real bummer about the two cars. I know it’s frightening.

Good luck with the litter picking. I’ve been doing some on the days between running. I predominantly find drink containers: plastic bottles, aluminium cans and occasionally a glass bottle. Snack wrappings are too numerous.

It makes good exercise for the back and allows me to feel sanctimonious as I mutter about litterbugs and modern life! What more could an old fogey like me need?

I find lots of fluorescent clothing focusses drivers minds. Possibly the thought of explaining how they managed to run over such a brightly coloured pedestrian makes them think twice.

I am in dayglo yellow. I know they saw me. I think they didn't see each other until it was too late to brake. I survived. That's all we can say these days.

They see but they don’t register. I tend to take a lot more road than I strictly need for as long as is safe. Even so some drivers don’t want to move even when there is no other car.

Yes, the reduction in traffic is one of the few advantages of the current situation - handy when you need to veer into the road to give a dog walker or fellow runner on the pavement the requisite 2m clearance!

Hope you and family are doing ok Jonathan? I expect you are missing your granddaughter’s weekly visits.

The pavements are a problem as they aren’t 2 metres wide so we are spending a lot of our daily exercise crossing the road or walking down it. The prom is wider but it would be so much easier if everyone walked on their left, like parkrun. Maybe they aren’t taught that at school anymore.

Keep running, keep safe.

We're fine thanks Dexy - glad you and UTS are too. Yes it has been a wrench, but we are making do with video calls as many other families are having to.

Our walks too consist of lots of zigzags from one side of the road to the other! Mind you I was amused yesterday to see this solution for runners

Stay safe and keep walking, with running hopefully not too far away!🤞😀

Very clever, but I’m not sure the average Pompey driver would take much notice of that. 😂

Isn’t it lovely having so little traffic on the roads theoldfellow? I’m amazed at how much louder the birdsong seems this spring, without traffic noise and planes above.

Talk about coincidence, the cars could have met each other anywhere but it was when they approached you!

What will you be doing at Easter this year? Usually such a busy time for you. Can you do an online service for your congregation?

theoldfellow profile image

We had all sorts of things planned for Holy Pascha, which is the week after Easter this year (Julian calendar), and for Holy Week before it. And Churches Together in Keswick had a load of things planned for Easter weekend (Gregorian calendar). But all shelved, I'm afraid. Looking after our brothers and sisters who we might infect comes first.

So it will all be virtual and on-line, as you say. We are not really up to it ourselves, but there a number of Orthodox Monasteries live-streaming their services (now we are all monks!).

The 3 of my flock who have had the virus so far are all on the mend now, thank God.

That’s great news about your flock members .

I will now have a vision of you running in a monk’s habit 😂😂

What a lovely idea to do a litter pick!

Sandie1961 profile image

A66 next on the list then? 😂 I don’t usually see many cars on my runs, but it is even quieter. Mind you, a cyclist veered out into the centre of the road so he was 2m from me - funny how we (and I include myself) even try to stay that far apart just to pass each other, even though the guidance says the risk is from being within 2m for 15 minutes! I have seen birds I don’t remember seeing before round us as well. You have to try to see the positives.

Oh well done theoldfellow ...sometimes a change of route is just the ticket!! And with less cars on the road we have no excuse!! I know what you mean about drivers throwing their litter around, I walked the dog the other day where I wouldn't usually go but the slip road down towards the trading estate was absolutely disgusting and I never even knew!! I had exactly the same thought as you...I might go back and do some litter picking too! Why do people do that????
