Cold air

Can anyone explain why it seemed so much harder to breath today (the weather was much colder than it has been) or am I making excuses?

Perhaps you ran a little too fast, were not hydrated enough, some runs are better than others, remember to drink plenty of water, at least one litre a day, some like to drink more than that, well that's what I drink, sometimes two litres, especially before the day I run a 10K which I have now ran 4.

Thankyou... I do think I need to remember to drink more

It does take a while for our lungs to adjust to cold air, so maybe spend a little longer warming up when it’s cold, and start running slower than you would normally to give them time to acclimatise. Happy running. 😀

Thank you! I will give it a try x

No, it can definitely have an effect. I find it helpful to breathe through a buff until my lungs are happier to take the unfiltered air, usually about 3/4 km or until I start to feel a bit suffocated 👍🏻🤣

The joys of dyslexia. I totally read that as breath through your butt, which painted some mind boggling images that I now can't quite shake...

Probably because you're breathing in a large amount of cold air through the mouth, It's better to breathe in through the nose (easier said than done for runners) as that way it very slightly warms the air, wearing a scarf over the mouth can help.

The only flaw to the breath through the nose advice is that when it's frosty, the moisture in my nasal passages has a tendency to make my nostrils freeze shut. Scarves are definitely the way to go...

No, they don't freeze..

When breathing through the nose, you may breathe in very cold air, but within a quarter of a second, the air temperature is quickly brought to 98.6 degrees. Many tiny blood vessels, known as capillaries, bring about this temperature exchange.

When a person breathes cold air, the tissues lining the nose swell as the capillaries dilate, bringing warm blood to heat the cool air. Swollen capillaries in the nose are the cause of nasal congestion (nasal congestion is backed-up blood, not increased mucus)

As a product of the far north who used to walk to school in the winter in temperatures of -10°C and below, trust me, they can freeze... ❄️⛄❄️

No cold air can take your breath away more!

Can happen to me; asthma related. I pull a neck gaitor over my mouth at the start of a run and that seems to do the trick. If I pull it over my nose as well it tends to steam up my glasses! Fine for breathing, but not good in terms of running into things!🤕
