Finally sub-30 minute for 5Km on Keswick Parkrun #40

theoldfellow profile image
β€’34 Replies

I've been trying to get a sub-30 minute 5Km since graduating, and today at my 40th Keswick Parkrun I managed 30.5 minutes for 5.2Km course, which is 29.33 minutes for the 5Km. Age grade 56.5%.

I keep telling them the finish funnel needs to move, but there isn't anywhere for it to go. I think I tell them to move the start next week. Trouble is, being a circuit, the length depends on the radius...

One of my old altar-boys (now all grown up) won.

Double Whammy!!

Yarooooo....πŸ‘Š

Well done! My local is long too; it’s very annoying 🀣

Well done theoldfellow, another box ticked for you. How brilliant! Our parkrun is slightly long too but better than being too short and not making that 5k record.

When does Keswick parkrun close , or are discussions going on about the tarmac suggestion?

theoldfellow profile image
theoldfellowβ€’ in reply toDexy5

They are still arguing about the tarmac - but the route is closed already and they are installing the new bridges and digging the tunnel under the A66. We won't get the Railway path back until late next year.

Yay, well done! The ultimate goal ticked off. I did Lincoln again today - official time exactly the same to the second as last time πŸ™€

Fantastic TOF! You knew it was only a matter of timeπŸ‘

Cracking stuff TOF! Is that 30.5 watch time or Parkrun time?

theoldfellow profile image
theoldfellowβ€’ in reply toUpTheStanley

Both. Unusually they were exactly the same. This means that I was actually faster than I thought, because there is some stationary time at the start while I jog on the spot waiting for the crush to move along.

Well done, that’s amazing :) I want a sub 30 too one day and this is so inspiring to read

Well done - thanks for posting - inspiring. My pb is 34:66 I really want to get sub 30 but the idea of taking s minute off per k seems impossible BUT you’ve got there so so can I

theoldfellow profile image
theoldfellowβ€’ in reply toSsasqueen

I started about 36 back in August '18. So it definitely doable.

Have fun doing it!

UpTheStanley profile image
UpTheStanleyGraduate10β€’ in reply toSsasqueen

Just go for one minute at a time, that’s only 12 secs per k which is obviously πŸ˜€ do-able, isn’t it?

Well done any particular training you can link to your success? Strength / interval / fartlek / longer distance.

theoldfellow profile image
theoldfellowβ€’ in reply tomartinhermanus

Persistence. I tried intervals, specifically 30-20-10 style, and all I got was a strained Hamstring. I'm sure proper training would have speeded things though.

Congradulations I am dreaming of a sub 30 time. I am wondering if did you do distance training to improve your time I am thinking of doing the bridge to 10k as I seem stuck at 38.58 or 39.00. Any tips would be much appreciated very well doneπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Oops I just saw your 10k graduate badge 😁

I tried extending the runs as a way of improving 5Km times. Not sure if it worked or not. The 10k was quite honestly an accident, I went out to run 7, and found myself 3Km from home... (Note to self, look at map before run).

JuJu's plan is excellent. Don't push too hard too fast or you will end up on the IC.

Good luck.

Thanks I definetly will be taking it easy as I learnt my lesson the last time I overtrained. As a result I was not running for months aftetwards. I am getting a bit obsessed with time so I think I will just go back to enjoying the absolute miracle that I am actually running thanks again and Happy Running

Well done, that was my target but achilles went. Aiming now to beat 35 mins, hopefully, but my old is 76, what is yours?

theoldfellow profile image
theoldfellowβ€’ in reply toSilverfox1943

Thanks.

It has been an Internet name since I was 45ish (and a Chartered Fellow of a Learned Soc.) but I'm only 69 right now...

I'm doing this 'cos 2 years ago I didn't think I'd make 70, and I was probably right!

35 minutes is a good aiming point for you I would think. If I can still manage 35 in 6 years, I'll think I did well.

Havnt ran this week, been on a river cruise and just leaving Lisbon now. I must have put on the half stone or so I had lost. Sun is rising and it is quite warm.
