Injured 6 weeks ago (fractured foot). Have been lurking on here reading with envy about all the fantastic running achievements. You are all so amazing!
I was supposed to be posting about my progress but I haven't felt able to because there hasn't been any.
Anyway, to fracture clinic on Monday, thinking all is well and the foot is practically mended. Doc says looking good, but another 6 weeks before thinking about running again. Quite gutted. Feeling the fitness disappearing. Thinking I won't be able to do this again, and it's made such a difference to my physical and mental health over the last 18 months. But now I'm Ms Glum of Glumshire again.
Have to salute the NHS, because the consultant was going to discharge me this week, but when I asked about the running, he said he'd like to see an X-ray in 6 weeks and check that all was OK to run again. What a star! That is just more work for the NHS isn't it?
But will I be able to start again, is what I'm thinking. As you can probably tell, the gremlins are on my shoulders.
Very happy running to all you runny people out there (that is the correct term apparently). πβ€

Oh Jo, so sorry to hear this happened to you. But seriously, you will be able to do this again, and it wonβt feel as hard second time around, trust me. Because through all your time running you gained knowledge and most importantly, mental resilience, which to be frank, is half, if not more, the battle. Wishing you well for your recovery - and looking forward to cheering you on when you are running again! Keep your chin up, you got this. xxx
Blub! Thank you so much - I have been feeling really down about the whole situation, so I know I need to focus on the positives, as they say! I really appreciate your thoughts and best wishes. This forum is a life saver. β€β€π
Aw, I do understand why you feel down, and know all too well how hard it is to stay positive. Thatβs why posting here was a great idea. We can gently remind you how fab you are, and how all that work you put in to running has not gone to waste, all that you learned stays with you, and you will easily build back up again. Easily. You are allowed to feel sad, but let us keep your spirits up and give you the positive perspective. Running is for life, and although you might have a few hiccups now and again (as all good athletes do, myself, ahem! included) you will always come back to it and take great joy in witnessing your fitness rebuild again. xxx
Oh thatβs such a shame - but it sounds like youβre in good hands and hopefully you can start up again when given the all clear. π
Plenty of people spend a prolonged time on the IC and make a successful return. So will you! Weβll help you on your way, so keep us posted with your progress! β€οΈ
So sorry for not keeping you updated. I thought I might try a C25K again but slightly speeded up perhaps. Just to ease me back into the running. But I still have to wait until September. Patience is a virtue, as my Mum used to say! ππ
Getting out for longer and longer. Did 22 miles/5hrs 15mins last Sunday. Went over on my ankle last night though so stiff muscles down right hand size, trying to massage/stretch that away asap. ππ»π
Good point. I have been doing some yoga and pilates classes, which have helped a bit. Whilst being careful about the foot. I think the gremlins are hoping I won't start running again but I think you all know that I will. Hopefully! π
Well same thing happened to me last day of June 2918, mine was a fractured ankle and strained ligaments so I can sympathise. I was in a boot for 6 weeks and on elbow crutches but what I did was order myself a leveller upper for my other shoe so I didnβt feel so lopsided and that made a helluva difference/ it was about Β£8. And a wobble board to strengthen my ankle once it was healed.
Then I went onto MedalMad and RaceatyourPace and signed up to walk 50k throughout Julyand 75k in August. Which I did - well 75k in July actually so I had to upgrade my bling (2 very nice medals ) and then I changed the August one to 100k and did it too. I was even going out in the rain and walking. Iβd worked out roughly how far I had to do wa h week but then kept pushing myself. Kept me motivated and while I was walking I picked loads of blackberries, sloes, rosehips and made cordials and syrups which kept us coldfree through this last winter.
Then the last week of September I was out walking and thought Iβd give C25k week1 a try and it was fine. I carried on and ended up only Doing 2 of the 3 runs most weeks and before Xmas I was back doing 5ks easily. Iβve since repeated B210k and now working up to HMs- did 18k this morning so yes you CAN do it again and we will all be here supporting you all the way π
That sounded like a nasty injury, so you did fantastically well with your recovery. I shall investigate MedalMad and RaceatyourPace - it is so good to have a target to aim at (and some bling at the end of it)! That is some seriously impressive walking that you did!
Thank you so much for the encouragement - I will aspire to be doing 5Ks again before Xmas. Happy running! ππ
I know exactly how you feel! I hurt my hip/back in June and have tried a few shuffles here and there but nothing great! I did exactly the same thing this time last year and got back to it in about September so hopefully weβll both be back at it by then. Itβs horrible how it affects our mental as well as our physical strength but weβll definitely get back to it as we so want to!! If itβs any help I had to have my ankle plated and and screwed halfway through my first attempt at c25k and it was fine to run on after about 12 weeks so yours should be fine. Our bodies are amazing π good luck π we should both be back to it by September ππ
So sorry to hear about your injury - back problems are the pits. I hope you're getting some help with it - physio or something. I shall try to follow your example in terms of coming back after injury.
Good luck to you too - here's to a runny September! π€π
I bet that was painful! Well done on starting again - you are so close to graduating now.
Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and encouragement. It really does help to know you are all out there! Good luck with the running. πππ
Yes, you will be able to start running again - and just ignore those gremlins! After all the running you've done, three months out isn't going to make you lose what you've already achieved. I had a sore hip for a few weeks last year and did some cycling to keep my leg strength up - maybe you could try that, or swimming if cycling hurts your foot. Good luck - you'll soon be back.
Thatβs brilliant news that the fracture is looking good and the doctors are pleased. Now thatβs what I call progress and brilliant progress. You are healing and the bone just needs to strengthen a bit more. You are getting there. As for Mrs Glum from Glumshire can you send her packing please π. You are far too busy for Mrs G. Walking is brilliant excercise and just what you need to get going again. Itβs simply great news you are doing so well and healing. π
Hope your walk went well and it you feel you better for it. am slowly building up my trotting again. Itβs hard work and slow going but I keep reminding myself that there were days I never could imagine being out again but here I am 12 weeks on and trotting away. I am hoping to just keep building up. Doing lots of ankle strengthening which I am sure has helped. Still swollen and a bit painful but thatβs to be expected. So onwards we go.... have they given you any excercises? Wobble board has helped me and of course lots of tip toes everywhere I go.
I'm a bit surprised that the hospital hasn't given me any exercises. Just warned strongly about (not) bending the foot to left or right. Apparently, the fifth metatarsal (the one I broke) has a tendon attached to it and if it gets over strained it can stop the bones re-attaching, which would mean an operation. That rather garbled explanation is my understanding of what the doc said!
The pain has more or less gone but I still get some swelling round the ankle sometimes. Anyway, looking back 4 weeks or so, the difference is amazing.
Trotting sounds good. Tip toe through the tulips! Best of luck with the recovery. I will try to improve my posting habit. πππ
Gosh no bending foot at all sounds difficult. Be extra careful Jo and itβs so worth waiting now to make sure you are fully recovered before you start anything. And just think where you will be in another 4 weeks. Every day is a day closer. Take care and no bending that foot !
I am OK to bend it down and up, but not right or left. Feel like I need a drawing to explain what I mean! Anyway, I am being ultra careful! Thank you. ππ
Oh, I do feel your pain and disappointment - but I hope you're keeping busy with your cross training!
In contrast to you, I'm thrilled having been to the GP this morning - 10 weeks post stress fracture - to be told I can start walking and should ditch the boot! Build up slowly though and listen to any worsening pain ...
Having said that, when I go back to the fracture clinic on 22nd - 3 months post break - I won't be leaving his room til he tells me I can start running! π€£π€£π€£
Hang on in there. You've got this far and are clearly still motivated and determined, and that's what really counts. May time pass quickly π€
Thanks Linda! So sorry to hear about the stress fracture - that sounds nasty and a lot more serious than my broken metatarsal (me and David Beckham, eh?). Glad to hear you can ditch the boot. I got fed up of stomping around in mine!
Try not to take the doc hostage when you see them on the 22nd π€£π€£π€£
Good luck with the recovery - look forward to hearing when all of us walking wounded are off the IC again! Thanks again for your best wishes. π€π
Well that's interesting. I haven't had to wear the boot for as long as you, so I wonder what the difference was. You'd think one broken metatarsal was much the same as another! Anyway, as you say, we will be back! ππ
Took 4 weeks for diagnosis. Then I've had 6 weeks in a boot. It's another 3 weeks til next fracture clinic appt. That will be 3 months from injury, about 9 weeks from when I stopped weight bearing. Everyone keeps pointing out I'm no longer 18 so it takes longer to heal ... π I'm hoping to be walking briskly for 30 mins, pain free, by 22/8 so I can convince clinic man to let me run. That's the plan. We'll see what reality brings π
Ah, that explains it. Waiting that long for a diagnosis must have been really crap! Good luck with the brisk walking, and I'll be thinking about you on the 22nd. ππ€
Just wanted to thank everyone who has responded so generously and with such great advice to my whiny post. Obviously I was on a bit of a downer yesterday, but today looks a lot brighter, thanks in no small measure to your support. I am constantly amazed and comforted by the fact that this forum, which is a social media platform I suppose, is populated by people with such generosity of spirit, common sense and basic kindness. Such a lovely thing in these times of division. Sorry, starting to get a bit philosophical!
Anyway, you're all fab! Thank you so much. ππππββοΈπββοΈβ€
Iβm so sorry to hear of your struggles. I totally understand the not posting when youβre in a bad headspace. That was me a few months ago. I would still come on and read but the thought of posting was too hard. I find I still have days like that where all I can do is βlikeβ. Iβm so glad you gave us an update though. You will be able to get back to where you were before your fracture though. Just take it slow and steady, listen to your body, and donβt compare yourself to what you used to do. This will be a whole new journey. Best of luck and keep us posted.
Thank you for the understanding - that's just how I have been - just about managing to "like" someone's post, and feeling that I have nothing valid to offer/share. The slow and steady mantra is definitely relevant when you're coming back from an injury!
Really appreciate the support and I will try to post a bit more often. ππ
Thank you! Yes I guess I am just being impatient and missing the vibe. I have been investigating Raceatyourpace at the suggestion of limberlou and have signed up to do a walking target in August. So that will help the time to fly by, hopefully. Happy running! ππ
