I was overweight unfit and unhappy that isn’t the reason I started C25K the reason here goes my journey.

I had to have an operation on my right elbow I had tennis elbow and a 10mm tear in my main tendon which had to be operated on so I had the operation all was good and it was a text book operation until 5-6 weeks after my hand was in constant pain nerve pain it was swollen like a balloon my fingers were like sausages and no power or grip also my shoulder was in a lot of pain to and my shoulder was capsulated ( frozen shoulder) so I went to see the doctor and I had developed (CRPS chronic regional pain syndrome ) so I was told it was going to take months and months of physiotherapy to get it right and this condition only gets better with rest and physio so it was all on me and the physiotherapist to help me I had to see a hand therapist and a shoulder specialist.

So I had 2 procedures on my shoulder first one didn’t work it was a cortisone injection right into my shoulder so then 2 months later another injection but this one was cortisone with saline now that procedure worked but I had a side effect my whole are went numb and this wasn’t supposed to happen but it did so we went to see the professor who did it but he went to another hospital that afternoon so we seen him and said it’s never happened and shouldn’t have and the procedure was text book and it was probably down to me having CRPS so the next day all was ok so I had to have more physio.

Then in the meantime I was having to keep going to meetings at work to see how I was getting on so I must of had about 4-5 meetings but the last one they terminated my contract so I had no money coming in when they paid me my last weeks sick pay but we’re positive and said when I get better I would be able to ring when the time is right and they would get me back to work so that was that I was upset so was my wife and my parents were to so that was that then.

So then I thought to myself because work said I probably won’t be able to do my old job I was going to prove them wrong and then this happened I decided to start C25K but then a few weeks later I started getting heart palpitations so I seen my GP And instead of me coming of Amitriptyline 10mg instead he put them up to 25mg and was also put on Propranolol 80mg modified-release capsules for anxiety and the amitriptyline for depression but again the doctor said carry on with your running as it’s very good for anxiety so I did that and he was so right.

So since then I’ve been doing my running which I love and my physio told me to go to a gym as doing weights was the only thing and physio that will fix me so I did as I was told. And I carried on doing C25K I graduated bought myself a pair of brooks ghost 11 and had a gait analysis I’m much fitter healthier and I’m also doing a diet I’ve lost well over 2 stone and I’m happy. I run park run near every Saturday I’ve ran race for life 5k and I’m smashing my time at parkrun and now I’m training for a 10K at the moment but I’m planning to go back to work in September and get my job back. That’s why I’ve got back into fitness to get myself back to work and prove them all wrong and that there isn’t no such word as can’t I am and I will 😉

But trust me it hasn’t been a walk in the park it’s been upsetting painful and stressful but I’m getting myself better and stronger than ever and I’m more happier person than I was and I’m never going to stop running or my gym training it’s very good for my mental health 😉

Sorry it’s so long winded but that’s my story how I got were I am today and without this forum and all the lovely people on here you know who you are xx

Thank you xx

What a terrific story, Kev. I am so sorry that you had to go through all that trauma to get you to this place. I really hope that your shoulder and arm are recovering now. Pain is a dreadful thing to live with. It’s not surprising people with chronic pain get depressed. Are you off your medication yet? I managed to dump my antidepressants that I had been on for most of my adult life. This was purely down to running. I feel much more whole, if you understand what I mean. As humans, we were built to exercise, and I am convinced that inactivity plays a big part in the decline in mental health.

Your progress, particularly in Parkrun, has been really impressive. Well done. You are a shining light to all of us on here. Xx

Well done Kevtrev. It would be easy to fold under that sort of adversity but you have found some positives from it. Thanks for sharing and best of luck regaining your job.

Thank you 👍🙏 and I got the negatives and turned them into positives. Trust me there we’re times I felt like folding under but I didn’t that’s because of the support from my wife and family and this forum and all the people who give me motivation 😉

Thank you so much I’m still on my meds I’m going to see the doctor and ask him about coming of them the pain isn’t bad now it’s getting better and I’m fitter than I ever have been. Just them antidepressants make me see things that aren’t there especially at night time not good and I do know what you mean plus if I get up to fast l go very light headed and my ears ring something rotten with them more than normal xx

What an inspiring post from you Kev, you truly have been through the mill, at least you employer offered your job back once you were a bit better, some employers would have dismissed you and told you never to come back irrespective of your health.

I do notice that many people on C25K start running to improve their health or reduce their weight, you certainly have, to run sub 30 minute 5k runs on a regular basis is excellent, gives you good confidence and certainly improves your health and reduces your weight.

Onwards and upwards for you regarding your quest for running a 10K.

Thank you Alan yes it’s been a long haul as my op was done the 5th sep 2018 crazy I know but my doctor said most people with my condition never fully recover and I’m so close and yes they do that at that company I know it could of been a different turn out but they know I’m good at my job and they didn’t want to do it and they will love to have me back when I’m ready.

Yes it’s also made me a fitter healthier happier me I’ve got my mojo back I seriously couldn’t wish it any other way and now I can see me doing a 10K race the way the training is going thanks again mate 😉
