Injury conundrum

I’m hoping someone wise and experienced will tell me what to do here. I’ve been very pleased with myself thus far for avoiding injury which I mainly put down to not overly worrying about pace. However, I’ve noticed some ankle pain creeping up on me. It’s on the inside of my right ankle between the heel and knobbly ankle bone.

I’ve been doing some self diagnosis and think I have a slight over pronation. Years ago I had a gait analysis and was recommended a particular pair of ASICS. I replaced them a few months ago with what I thought was the modern equivalent version.

It’s not hugely painful but enough for me to be thinking ahead. Definitely makes me wince when I get up in the morning. I iced last night and this morning. I’m looking at trying a pair of orthotic insoles but my husband thinks I should see a physio. This feels a bit OTT to me so that’s why I’m here asking you.

Anyone have similar experience? TIA

Maybe time to get another gait analysis? I found Asics to be too built up, but everyone is different. Maybe you could try sime foot and ankle strengthening exercises too, but if it diesn't settle down a physio would make sense. I do wonder about your shoes though. Good luck

Thanks Roxdog, you may be right about the gait analysis. I’ve heard others say this about Asics too. Food for thought.

Mr google will give whatever answer you want whereas a gait analysis at a specialist running shop will tell you about the best footwear and a physio will tell you about your particular injury. Hope it’s just a niggle. Happy running 🤗

Thank you Grannyhugs. Will have a couple days rest and take it from there.

Sounds like ankle deltiod (medial) ligament strain. According to sources I've found it's caused by eversion (turning/rolling outwards) of the foot, possibly with some twisting.

You might have too much support in the shoe, or you've trained your foot to land badly.

Gait analysis might identify the mechanics behind the problem.

Go easy on it. You don't want to make an annoying problem into a major injury. Definitely do some ankle strengthening exercises.

(It's a component of what's currently got me on the IC.)

Thanks Nowster. I’ve never heard of too much support being an issue. So much to learn. I’ll take an extra rest day and will take a trip for a fresh gait analysis if it persists. Nearest is an hour’s drive, unfortunately. What’s IC, if you don’t mind me asking?

Injury Couch. An exclusive club of C25Kers who can't currently run due to hurting something.

Aaaah, I see. I hope you’re not out of action for too much longer.

PS. Gait analysis first. Physio if it doesn't improve.
