Never thought I would ever say this but...

I much prefer running in the winter! Don’t get me wrong, lovely sunny mornings are a joy, but talk about sweaty! I have lost all hope of speed since the temps have gone up (but no matter, I need to slow down for my HM training anyway). But, I miss the exhilarating feeling of stepping out into a cold morning and getting warm during my run. 🙁 It’s the humidity in London that gets me. Oh well, back to super early runs again to beat the heat!

Happy running to you all.

So the silver lining is it will help steady your pace? Happy snail pace running 😁

Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Katnap

Absolutely, Katnap! What a great positive. 😁 I will save speed for autumn, again. 😁👍

Katnap profile image
KatnapGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

You can do speed at the end of your run.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Katnap

😂😂😂 Not so sure about that, but I’ll give it a whirl!

It's reasonably bright by 5 am anyway. So plenty of time to get increased distance runs in.

I DID read somethings about recovery after long runs you should have a little afternoon nap.

I LOVE a nap after my long run, Lou! Sleep is the best healer. 😁

There are evening runs too Sadie! 😉...first thing doesn't work for me, but once the heat is out of the day, a bit of shade, maybe a breeze...(*must remember to wear a wet buff) Good to go!

I know you are an early bird though, and like to get things done and dusted... 😆your HM training is keeping you very busy, you are working hard...hot work, but worth it!😊xxx

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Bluebirdrunner

In 21 months of running I have not once run in the evening! I like the “newness” of the morning (plus fewer cars and people about!) Wet buff saved me during last summer and the heatwave. Thanks for the reminder. 😘

I am loving the HM training, even the cross training bits! Thanks lovely Jan.

Silly question but how do you wear your wet buff? (In any other forum I could be excluded for such questions 😂)

Round your neck? as a headband?

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Jogunlikely

Not a silly question at all! I wear it around my neck, and swivel it around every now and then (the bit on your neck warms up, so swivel the front around to the back now and then). I sometimes pull up and wear over my head if running in sun. It does help!

Jogunlikely profile image
Jogunlikely in reply to Sadie-runs

Thank you. I'll give it a go 😊

I think Ju ju suggested putting your wet buff in the freezer before wearing it! Very hot days only maybe😆xx

I wear it round my wrist and use it to mop the sweat from my face during the run?

Hi Sadie, I don’t like winter particularly but spring and autumn are best for me🙂🏃‍♂️I find summer a bit of a struggle but I managed my PB at Lloyd parkrun in summer last year. All very strange! I think with me it’s just down to my mood on the day😳

I can’t do early morning runs as I already get up at 4:05, commute across London at start work at 6:30😊

We’re getting out there anyway and doing our thing and that’s all the counts🙂 Good luck!😀🏃‍♀️👏👏

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to David_G

I trained for my 10k during last summer’s heatwave! Had to go slow, but I like to think that it made me stronger. 💪 And lorks! You start at 6:30am?! I hope you get to knock off early! That’s tough.

Yes, we are getting out there come rain or shine, all for the love of it! 😁😘

David_G profile image
David_G in reply to Sadie-runs

Training in the heatwave? No thanks 🥵

Yes, start at 6:30 and mostly finish at 15:00 so I miss the rush hour both ways. I’m very lucky to be able to do that!🙂👍 I doubt I could stand commuting in rush hour every day😠🤯

Happy running 🏃‍♀️ 💪👍x

You are not the only one! I much prefer running in autumn and winter! 🙂🏃🏽‍♀️💨❄️🍂🌧

Autumn is particularly lovely, but I do mourn the dwindling early morning light...

Sandraj39 profile image
Sandraj39Graduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

As the evenings close in, I just don my chestlight! 😀I am keen to do another HM too but will look for an autumn/winter one just to avoid long training runs in the summer!

Try some parks, there are quite a few where you are. Battersea is great and mostly shaded, Hyde Park is massive and have lots of shaded areas. l tend to mix it all and although l love warm/hot weather l would never run in the blazing sun. And l really enjoy evenings, there's something calming about them. And don't forget to hydrate, wear shades and headgear! ;)

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to mrrun

I was running in Battersea Park this Wednesday! Lovely, but rather small for me long runs. Will try Hyde at some point, and Regents (my fave). I like early early morns cos I don’t have to worry about getting sunburnt then, and there are far fewer people around (I am hugely antisocial)!

mrrun profile image
mrrunGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Antisocial element is my driving running force. Spending hours running on my own in a big city where nobody knows me is priceless. I can't do events, don't deal well with crowds and dislike all that group business. l do that for a living so this is my escape. Having said that, during a single run only last week l heard 4 people cheering me on, waving and calling out the name on my jersey. Larry Bird is still remembered by many. ;)

Hi Sadie, I’m doing the Regents Park 10K in early August🏃‍♂️👍 Just getting ready to leave for Vitality London 10K. Wish me luck!😊🤞

I’m still loving the warm weather to run in, although it was mighty hard work schlepping 2.5k up the hill at PR this morning. But fantastic coming back down again! I know what you mean though - any hotter than today and it wouldn’t be quite so pleasant. 🥵 🥵

I guess I’m still loving wearing minimal running gear, not needing to deal with layers and runny noses! 😅😅

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

Today was manageable - but it’s bound to get hotter eeeek! Oh well, we got through last summer, Cheeky, so we’ll surely get through this one. I do love wearing shorts. 🌞😎😅

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

We’ll do it Sadie! Shorts, shades, water, the right time of day - we’ll have a blast this summer! 😀👍🏃‍♀️☀️👊🥵

Well done Sadie I have been watching the thermometer myself! I had been thinking about an early morning run myself tomorrow but that was to avoid the rain scheduled but now am thinking maybe the heat too! 🌡️

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Richard7

Heat really makes a 5k run feel like an endurance challenge, doesn’t it?! Weather a bit all over the place right now, so rain or shine, I hope you get a lovely run in, Richard. Strength training and a spot of yoga for me tomorrow. 😊💪👍

BaddieThePirate profile image
BaddieThePirateGraduate10

Well luckily for you we have a winter every year! Happy hot runs 😀 Or I suppose you could do very early runs and watch the sun come up?

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to BaddieThePirate

That’s exactly what I do! I have been known to run at 5:30am during heatwaves! 😎

BaddieThePirate profile image
BaddieThePirateGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

I can only get up that early if I've got jet lag! Good going early bird 😀

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to BaddieThePirate

Perimenopausal insomnia means I wake up at that flipping time anyway, so I may as well get up and run, I say! Joy. 😂

BaddieThePirate profile image
BaddieThePirateGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Been there, done that. If I have a hot drink I get a hot flush now which is why I wear pink t-shirts a lot, so I have a 'matching' outfit 😊

Yesterday was my first run and swim session this year. Running along the seafront, I can’t resist taking off my trainers and having a quick swim when I get hot!

It does adjust a bit (I’m remembering last summer!)

I know how you feel. I am in TRNC and it is starting to warm up here. I run along a coastal path which gets a breeze but often it is still and humid. I have 1 run week 7 to do then week 8. After that probably short runs for the summer. I am thinking 4/5 k with some speed bursts in. I can probably do that without carrying water too.

I did note that I was knackered at my usual pace when it went up a few degrees, really surprised at the effect.

For the first time in my life I have rhinitis. Thought it was a headcold at first or sinus infection, but it has gone on and on. Grrr

I would say slow it down or do shorter with some infervals. Keep at it though!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Jonno34

Slowing down and drinking water with electrolytes got me through my 10k training last year during the heatwave - that and running at a ridiculously early time! I am now training for a September HM, so I guess the same rules will have to apply. (And I have no choice, I have to do one long run a week to get up to 19k before the day! 😬😱).

Rhinitis is a pain! Do you have medication? Keep at it too! 😁

I definitely agree! its cooler and drizzly here this morning and I'm off!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to

Yes, a wee bit cooler today - happy running, Helen!

I know exactly what you mean! There’s just something about running on a crisp cold day.

London is super sweaty - I’m always searching out the shade.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Pancakes86

Oh Pancakes, totally agree - London can get really sweaty and humid 😰. A bit of hot sun is okay, because you can find shade to run in, but there is no escaping humidity! 😱

Pancakes86 profile image
Pancakes86Graduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

I’m really hoping the temperature drops tomorrow - I’m doing the Vitality 10k and central London will be crazy hot if it’s anything like today!

Sadie-runs profile image

Oh good luck and enjoy! Electrolytes in water are your friend! And slowing your pace, of course. Let us know how you get on. 👏👏👏
