My husband and two teenagers were more than a little amused this morning when I returned from my run saying I'd been chased by zombies π€£π§ββοΈπ§ββοΈ. ........
I haven't posted here for a while as my motivation for running has suffered something of a nose dive during the past month as a result of various things going on. I've managed at least one run a week, but nothing very far and even then they were a struggle, with nothing special to report. Such a shame when just a month ago I ran my first 10k.
Well, this morning I decided all that had to change.
Reading CBDB's enthusiastic posts over the past few months has been entertaining - she's game for all sorts! She is also a great advocate of the zombies π§ββοΈπ§ββοΈ, and I have enjoyed reading about her discoveries and adventures, so this morning's run is really down to her. I think it was probably the misty, murky morning outside the window that finally did it. As I drank my morning coffee I found myself downloading the Zombies, Run app onto my phone and the rest, as they say, is history......
This morning's run felt as easy and enjoyable as the last few runs had felt hard going. I had very little knowledge of what to expect from the app, as I hadn't played any sneak previews, but I really enjoyed the story and it definitely had me picking up my pace when I could hear those zombies breathing over my shoulder!! The fog and the cold helped to create the right atmosphere as I ran through the woods.
So, a big thank you to CBDB for leading me down this particular path of discovery and for giving my two teenagers a laugh this morning when I told them I had been running away from zombies. (Well I never thought I would ever come out with that line either!).
Yay Delly-dot is back π I was starting to get worried about your lack of posts. Obviously now I even more worried that you're being chased by zombies π―
But seriously I'm glad you've managed to find some fun back out there in the mist π I've often wondered about giving the zombie runs a go and it sounds like you'd recommend them.
I love a foggy day none up in Yorkshire though its forcast for the weekend.
Look after yourself... Don't let the π§ββοΈ get you x
It's nice and sunny this afternoon, but still really chilly. Hard to imagine the 15 degrees and sunshine we are forecast to have on Saturday, but I'm looking forward to it.
Yes, definitely feel like I'm back. Had myself worried for a while there too. Thank you.... π€
Welcome to Abel Township Runner 5! You are most welcome! I love Zombies Run, I play it every time I run now, along with my music or my podcast. I had to pay extra to get unlimited access to missions, the free version only gives you one free mission per week. I generally refuse to pay for any app when a free alternative is available, but this one was totally worth it!!
The one free mission was fine for me until I started doing the base building part of the game. Thatβs where you set up your base on your phone at home after your run, using materials and supplies that you gathered during your mission. I kept running out of materials and wanted to get out there and do another mission to get more! Good fun!
I think itβs $5.99 per month or $34.99 per year. Believe me I NEVER pay for stuff like this! I also occasionally play PC video games and I religiously avoid games that require a monthly subscription. I will consider paying a set price, but the monthly/yearly thing just annoys me! It can really add up! But this time, I figured i had started and stopped so many different exercise programs over the years that it would be worth it if it kept me motivated. And it really does. $35 a year is seriously nothing if you consider it an investment in your health or even as a form of entertainment.
Anyway, sorry to get on my soapbox there! I promise I donβt get a cut of the subscription prices! π
When I started I tried the once a week thing for free because if I was only running 3 times a week, I knew Iβd want at least once to be with the Nike Run Club guided runs, so I figured once a week would be fine. But I got hooked on Zombies and now use it every run, except for very occasional guided runs on NRC π.
Thanks for the info. I might take a look at Nike Run Club too as it gets lots of mentions here on the forum but I don't know anything about it. It might be nice to mix things up a bit. π
Thank youπ. Catwise has just told me I will only get one mission per week on the free version, so I'm thinking I might need to pay-up to access them more frequently?
I only used the free version Delly-dot. The story missions. You just wait for the new one to be unlocked. I liked using it for longer runs too, because they carry on talking and acting as DJ's for your music once the mission is over.
Well done Delly-Dot of the Dead! I am really struggling too and am peering out at the blue sky and autumn gold of the leaves! Peering is as far as I have got to... doing my watercolour course instead! Oh and the puppies were born on Tuesday. Will post a pic... not sure if I can dm you with it. Happy to take a kick up the proverbial to get me going.
Hello! Glad to see you back on the forum! That sounds like fun, but I would be too scared! Well done for getting out in the mist and cold!
It's a difficult time, but glad you've managed to keep up your runs. I'm only managing 2 a week - one long run and one recovery run. No intervals or training going on - just running.
Thanks Roxdog. I've kept my yoga and pilates going and lots of lovely long dog walks, despite all the awful wet weather! Your two runs a week sounds a good balance. Enjoy π€
My kidsβ reaction this morning was priceless! Loved the atmosphere of the fog this morning but I wasnβt brave enough to start on Halloween π π§ββοΈ π§ββοΈ π π
The zombies helped me to shake off the gremlins today so theyβre not too bad in my book!
Brave move Dolly-dot, especially in the fog, that combination, fog, woods and zombies would have brought on heart failure for me for sure! So glad this lifted your running back into easy and enjoyable zone. Sorry itβs been such a difficult month for you and sending you a big virtual hug and hoping things improve very soon π€ π€π€
So youβre the latest Runner 5. Well done Delly-dot, canβt beat a zombie breathing in your ear to get your legs moving on a misty morning, great fun, Iβve used it a several times and intend to revisit it when I fancy a change. Your photos definitely set the scene and create the perfect atmosphere π±π§ββοΈ
If you press the base icon at the bottom on the zombie app (middle one) you can build your base camp with the credits youβve earned on your run, have a look π π
Hello Runner 5!!! How could I have missed this post and you running around in Zombie-friendly weather!!! Nice! Looks gorgeous day to chase zombies! π
Runners lead adventurous lives, from running from end to end to saving the world from zombies! And all at the same time!
I have not subscribed to the Zombies app and am also now planning in only one run per week. For supplies, one can do workouts (Homefront) and set the tracking method to βsimulate runningβ. (Although I always forget)
But the βsimulate runningβ setting should be great also for treadmills.
And I also learned from someone on this forum to not set the app to play one mission after the other. I now let a 20 min mission run out on a 60 min run, and then Abel radio comes on which is really good and almost has its on storyline whilst fitting into the zombie universe.
So nice to hear about your run!!! ππ§ββοΈππ»ββοΈ
It was fun to run along to a story. Iβd like to look at NRC as lots of people mention it on here but I still donβt know much about it. Are they guided runs?
Yes. You can choose all sorts of different runs eg recovery, intervals at different lengths from 10 mins to miles! They all have different themes with coaches or athletes doing the commentary like Paula Radcliffe or Mo. You can play your music in the background but only Spotify or Apple Music I think. And all free so nothing to lose! Iβm trying a 32 min headspace run today and boy do I need it after a busy week!
Thanks for the info. It sounds really interesting so I shall take a look. Enjoy your headspace run. That sounds right up my street and probably as different to zombies as you can get! π
Goodness me, being chased by Zombies what a fright! There is something about the unknown isn't there.....yesterday I started the second week of Ju Ju's Magical Plan and towards the end, maybe the last half kilometre or so I was convinced I was being followed by a car with a squeaky wheel which made me run a bit quicker; but as I did the car speeded up too. I got home with the squeak still audible and I turned around to see nobody there. The squeak had stopped too. It turned out that one of my running shoes had for whatever reason developed a squeak all along, and I laughed as I made my way up to the front door, right shoe squeaking all the while....So, no Zombies for me!!
π You had a whole storyline of your own running around your head! No need for Zombies. The Magic Plans are great. I have completed both, first the timed and then the distance. Which version are you doing? Both work wonders. π
I like a bit of structure and started to miss the C25K podcasts, so I chose the timed version just so I could replay Jo's WK9R3 cast. I had spotted that Ju Ju's at the start was for 30 mins to start with then 35 mins, (so I could keep running through the warm down walk). During my consolidation runs I'd managed three 5K runs but they all took 45 mins each. I thought I'd stick rigidly to the timed version first to see how I get on. I think I should be able to get to 60 mins then I'll start the distance ones....they fill me with some dread though; how to propel this slightly ageing older lump around any course anywhere for 10k is beyond me! But I'll give it a go, the plans are 'magical' aren't they, so wonders could just happen!
I took a while to get to that elusive 5k after graduation, but roseabi came up with a plan that helped myself and a few fellow runners get there. It gradually merged into week 4 of the timed version of the Magic Plan. I reached 60 minutes running 8k and then ju-ju suggested I join the distance version of the plan at week 4 as the longest run is 8k. Everything worked out well and I ran my first 10k on my birthday last month. It sounds like you will be doing something similar. Enjoy π
