Info on CRT for anyone interested:

Canal and River Trust is now a charity and no longer totally funded by the government. If anyone is bored and wants to volunteer some time there are groups all round the country looking after different parts of the canal system canalrivertrust.org.uk for more info. It's a great way to get out in the fresh air and make friends!

And of course the towpaths are super for running on!

Thanks for sharing this, our family are members. The towpaths are great for running aren't they? They've recently done up the section near me, and the surface is lovely for running, crushed slate, which is firm enough to run on, but has just enough give to be kinder on the legs. My first 10k was an out-and-back along the Macclesfield canal. I assume you run along the upper peak forest do you, when you do a towpath run?

And Macc canal, and Caldon and others when I'm there, normally with work 🏃

Wish I lived closer to the canal. Love walking along it 😀

You'll have to visit as many as possible, maybe when you're on your holidays, or days out. Make it a destination!

We are close to the Kennet and Avon. But need to drive there. 😁

We have friends in Macclesfield and I love walking along the canal there. It’s great that this organisation exists to keep them up.

If I was feeling brave I’d run as far as Macclesfield, it’s only 10 miles, right? :)

Oops I think that was meant for someone else 🤔

Marple to Bollington 7 mile. Marple to Macc 10 miles. There are muddy sections on this stretch so pick a dry few days or walk it in your wellies!

I think if I ever do that, I’ll try it in sections beforehand, I like to know what to expect!! I went out on the towpath this morning; 5k out-and-back from High Lane to Marple. The new bit round High Lane is great, the only dodgy section is towards Marple, but not too bad yet. I shall post more details later :D

I was going to run my 10km via High Lane but chose to do a run on a surfaced trail after a night and morning of rain. There is a section I can’t remember clearly which I think is a bit rough and muddy. I do plan on running more of the Macc in dryer weather. I’ve done the entire upper Peak.

I need to try the upper Peak Forest actually, I’ve run to the junction with the Macc at Marple, but never turned the corner. Once I can figure out a good circular route, I’ll give it a shot I think.

Nice to know there’s another local runner on here though :)

199 bus goes through Whaley Bridge, through Furness Vale, through New Mills.

You could get the bus up and run home...? Probably better than waiting for a bus once you've done the run and getting cold.

How long is the Macc canal in total? I'm off to have a look.

The Macc canal is 26 miles or 42km long. I might make completing it on foot (in 5 or 6 sections) a new goal. I wish it was still summer so the long light evenings could be running time.
