Just discovered this hole in my shoe while stuffing them with paper after my run this morning! What do I do? Can they be mended? Should I still use them ? Is this the end ???!! 😱😫😥⚰️⚰️

I bet you could put a stitch in there. It shouldn’t really effect the performance. Have you had them long?

Since March. I’ve been running over rough ground, mainly off road for the past couple of months though so really need trail shoes I think. I will certainly try a stitch though.

It's only a small hole?? Doesn't look fatal... it's more a question of the miles you've done in them...

Quite a few now! It just appeared unexpectedly so I was a bit taken aback - I love these shoes!!

Haha yes I’ll put a few stitches in - keep the going a while longer !

Definitely time to cut those gnarly toenails.

Hahaha - you might have a point there - I noticed holes in my (very cheap) socks too!! I had a pedicure last week though!!!

How are the soles looking?

sarah65 profile image
sarah65Graduate10 in reply toJay66UK

Ok I think - never really looked at them if I’m honest though 😳

Sounds to me like a good excuse to buy a new pair 😉

Yes you’re absolutely right.

That’s what running 10k does to you Sarah 🏃‍♀️👟

😂 it was worth it. I’m actually a bit proud of that little hole. Makes me feel like a proper runner!

A stitch definitely looks possible. Not really the critical side of your shoes, so if the soles are good then who cares. (My favourite pair of Gortex walking shoes have holes like that all across both toes, but I still prefer wearing them to all my others!)

Yes I’ve had walking shoes like that. Too comfy to give up on! I’ll definitely try a stitch x

Went through a phase of putting my big toe through shoes very quickly and wasn't the only one about these parts. Doesn't really matter until the hole is big enough that your toe gets stuck in it...

sarah65 profile image
sarah65Graduate10 in reply toGoogleMe

Oh no! How can that happen ?? 😂

AnnieW55 profile image

One of mine had that happen when they were relatively new. Couldn't take them back as hadn't noticed after which run it happened, so didn't know if my fault or a fault. Still running in them, unmended, months later.

sarah65Graduate10 in reply toAnnieW55

That’s reassuring - I’m not giving up on them yet !

Stick with them if that's the only problem. Mine sometimes do the same thing, current pair seem to have a little extra plastic strip which I think is to try and protect the mesh from your toes!!

sarah65 profile image
sarah65Graduate10 in reply toancientrunner

I’m still going to wear them while they’re comfy and until I can get some trail shoes. Soles look ok now I’ve checked them out !

Yep, my big toe nails, especially the right, do that to socks and lightweight sports shoes all the time …. :-( Got a hole like that in my latest runners after about 3 months. With socks, you can still use them on the other foot, but that probably won't work as well with shoes :-)

sarah65 profile image
sarah65Graduate10 in reply toUpTheStanley

Haha no!! Might be worth be buying better socks though I guess

Mine all all have holes in each toe box Dorsiflexion apparently I ignore it 🙂

I haven’t heard of that before so I just looked it up - might be due to my running style then? There’s so much to learn with this running business! 😁

It's probably where you stick your big toe up as you run. i do that too. as long as the cushioning in the shoe is still fine and the soles aren't worn, i wouldn't worry. However, it's right at the end of the shoe. Have you got a finger's width between the end of your big toe and the end of the shoe when you stand with your weight fully on your feet?

That’s a good point Flick - when I bought them I thought about a bigger size because there wasn’t a lot of extra toe room but I’ve always found them comfy when running so hadn’t thought of it as a problem.

I had a pair of ASICS trail shoes like that. They were absolutely fine till I started doing 10k or longer runs. It’s hilly round here, my feet swelled with the distance and warmer weather and the pressure of running downhill pushed my toes against the ends of the shoes and I came home with a black toenail, which I still have. I gave the shoes away. I needed just a half size bigger. It was months ago. Wretched toenail still hasn’t grown out, though luckily it hasn’t fallen off either 😳

Yes sounds like it’s hanging on in there! 😂 I will bear that in mind when I go shopping for my trail shoes. I have started to do longer distances now and am running in woody areas when I can.
