I started C25k in January, graduated in March, did a parkrun and a few consolidation runs and had just started Week 1 of Ju-Ju's plan when I was struck down with tendinitis in my knees. So had 10 sessions of physio over 6 weeks and then during that time the arthritis in my neck flared up. Now I've known for a while about the arthritis but it had never troubled me previously other than a slightly stiff neck. However, this pain was absolutely excruciating - in my neck, head, shoulders and down my back. Steroids and morphine brought the pain down to a more manageable level and it all gradually eased off. My neck s now much stiffer than it was before and can be painful if I try to turn my head too suddenly.
However, the last few weeks I have been doing exercises to strengthen my neck, knees and core plus a lot of walking, a bit of cycling (walking up the steepest hills to spare my knees!) and using my cross trainer and rowing machine.
So, lying in bed at 6.30am I thought, Right today is the day I test out my knees. On with the knee supports (plus some running gear obviously!), headphones on and out the door. The sunshine was slightly hazy so it wasn't too hot. I live 5 minutes from a running track, which is rarely used during the week and I had it to myself this morning. I did 5 laps and in each lap I walked half way and ran half way. I was slower than a lame tortoise but I didn't care - I was RUNNING! I ran a total of 1k and walked 2k, including the walk there and back. Not far, I know, but I didn't want to push it first time out.
So far, knees and neck are feeling fine and I don't plan to try again until Monday. In the meantime, I'll continue with my other exercises. Keep your fingers, toes and eyes crossed for me please!
