Update on my wife.

Alwaysreading_46 profile image

Hey folks. I hope everyone is well. I have not had too much time to come on and write, so apologies.

My wife finally had her Xray last monday. No results yet. Blood tests came back with her cholesterol being 5.6 which they said is a little high and advised lifestyle changes along with giving her the good old folic acid. Which we know is a synthetic form of vitamin B9. So that's being sorted out.

She finished a course of a weeks Prednisone whilst she waited the sputum test results.

She has been a lot better but has started with more green phlegm again just not consistent coughing.

The sputum test result came back Monday and the doctor called us.

Apparently. She showed E Coli and was given another week of amoxycillin 500mg for one week. She asked if that would be enough and he told her if she is not better to call him afterwards. 🤷

This to me doesn't sound right as we have E Coli in our body anyway and for it to cause what for intents and purposes has been akin to severe bronchitis or pneumonia sounds weird.

We are going to monitor with these again and she said her chest at times feels tighter but it passes. So, still an ongoing back and forth but let's see what this week brings.

Reverted to amoxy again, it feels like they never listen. 🙄

Sincerely.

Craig.

Here’s hoping she feels much better soon. Not sure about the antibiotic been prescribed. There are stronger ones such as doxycycline. I would have thought she would benefit from a step up antibiotic having been so unwell for so long. With regards the E. coli it maybe that, that in itself didn’t cause chest infection but due to being run down has caused an issue for her.

Get well soon.

Hey Bevvy. I hope you're well.

Well she went from amoxycillin for a week. Didn't completely clear it. To clarithromycin. Almost but left her again after. Only week doses. Then Co amoyxclav. Also one week. So clearly not enough to completely eradicate it.

So the journey continues.

I’m afraid I would be kicking up a fuss. One week is clearly not long enough and infection has lingered too long. Poor wife.

Also bear in mind that when I have been SO unwell it has taken sometime to recover even though actual infection has cleared up.

Hi Alwaysreading. Fingers crossed your wife starts to show improvement soon. It must be awful for her and very worrying for you.

As for E. coli there is a type of pneumonia associated with it, if memory serves me well.

Hey Troilus. I hope you're well. This was my finding also. She majorly improved whist on Prednisone even after the antibiotics. Last lot were Co amoxiclav. But the odd green stuff coming up. She's not coughing as much but a tight ish chest now and again and feeling drained.

That was the strongest she's had but they've gone back to the old faithful they always give out. 🙄

Amoxicillin? My favourite! Broad spectrum, kills a multitude of bugs- even the ones you didn’t know you had. 😁

I have usually found that I need a dose of steroids as well as ab's to clear an infection up. I have been told a few times that she should kick in within 48 hours. `

There are a huge number of bacteria which come under “E.coli”. Although present elsewhere in our bodies, they don’t normally invade the lungs, but can cause serious trouble if they do. I’ve been made quite ill with it in the past. Presumably the lab report showed your wife’s strain is sensitive to amoxil but definitely get back to gp if she continues unwell. She might need IVs to really knock it on the head

Hey Eleanordigby.

It was a surprise to me for sure. I was sure it would be something like pseudonomas etc but she has shown all the signs of severe bronchitis / Pneumonia.

But one week of three 3x a day. We shall see what happens but she won't be waiting if there are remnants of it after this week.

For the obviously persistent infective symptoms yr wife has,she really shld ask for a longer course of antibiotics

Hi. You would have to assume that the sputum result shows that the bacteria will respond to amoxy, that's what the Dr's should go off.You can always ask this. I am on steroids this week as the virus I had at Xmas wasn't settling. First time I've taken them. Chest is improving but producing green phlegm. Hoping it's not going to make the pseudomonas I have worse in the long run. 🤞

Good luck to your wife.

Ecoli In Sputum can be caused by acid reflux. This was the case with me - obviously at night your wife should use lots of pillows and if she doesn’t already take Omeprazole it might help going forward. Amoxicillin sorted out mine, I normally need much stronger IV’s for infection but this particular one responded to Amoxicillin.

Hi.. I came out of a private hospital after an op with Ecoli.. I certainly wasn't well and it took 3 weeks to go. I hope she picks up soon.

When I still feel bad after a course of antibiotics, I give it a week to see if it will improve, if it doesn't I get another sputum test done. I hate taking antibiotics that are not specific for that bug. Also your wife should be given 2 weeks of correct antibiotic. If your wife doesn't feel better after amoxicillin, do another sputum test. Hope she feels better soon x
