Pulse 72 ... O2 saturations 97
Weight 7O kgs Height 5 ft ..
Nurse queried do I actually have COPD ... She's new to the practise and told me my last exacerbation was 2021 when I used my antibiotics and steroids ....
I should at least be having a chest infection once a year to claim to have COPD ....
My reply was don't talk rubbish I didn't have a chest infection in 2021 ... I got steroids and antibiotics as my rescue pack at home had run out of date and I needed more ... I haven't used the ones I was given in 2021 either ...

She then told me I looked very well for having stage 4 copd ... which made me snigger a little I don't ever really take much pride in my appearance as being a dog walker is not the cleanest of jobs I wear wellies all year round... with shorts and I'm covered in dog hair and slobber but always have a beaming smile as I'm happy in my bubble with the dogs ...
I did change for the appointment into jeans and a tshirt of sorts ....and put some lippy on...maybe that helped me look beautiful 😍 😂
She then gave me flow chart with my scores of 0 to 5

She's now going to query with my doctor are the xrays and scans from the last 10 years ....all giving me the correct diagnosis and its not just athsma ....
I did inform her I don't have athsma I have do COPD .......
her reply was welllllll your the patient I'm the nurse...
Never have I felt more stung by someone's words ....
I asked had she looked at my medical records prior to my check up ...NO
I asked her had she met me before to give her the right to query my condition after 10 years of having it ... NO
Does she know me well enough to judge the lack of breath and chest tightness when I feel bad on bad days ...NO
Did she also know I'm a retired scrub nurse of 35 years most of it spent getting my hands dirty and smoking 60 ciggies a day (my doing).... NO
Query away I requested the GP will tell you what I have told you ...the hospital will tell you what I have told you ...
Is it a case of never judge the book by its cover because its looks good on the outside it dosent make for an interesting read ......
Or just a nurse who didn't take the time to read my notes prior to my appointment ..
I don't know why I have written this just felt the need .....

You needed to get that off your chest so to speak and you know your body better than anyone. You’re doing pretty well because you keep going…..walking the dogs in the fresh air does you good. Take no notice of someone who didn’t even read your notes before your check up, just keep on doing what you’re doing.
Hi Carole I was just taken aback slightly by the comment "your just the patient..I'm the nurse " 😂😂😂I nearly double flipped and cart wheeled across the room to give her a little opinion of my own ... stupid child 🙄 😂😂😂
And flow charts don't even get me started on those things look further than a piece of paper never ever in my career fill one of those things in unless it was for 💩 and urine ....

Good post and a damn good read. 🤪I actually feel a lot better after reading this! And I'm damn sure most of us will too!I guess your positivity will let this go. I think it is the nurse that is wearing wellington's, but that her wellington's are filled with cement.
But many of us would encourage you to write a formal letter of complaint to the surgery.
NB Next time you visit, take your photo album with you and encourage the nurse to look beyond the front page.
Ohh I would never complain about her after telling her in my own words that's enough ....I can get quite spicy with my words and I'm sure she heard a few during my appointment....
As a scrub nurse I never spoke to my cases as obviously they were asleep due to anaesthetic...
When I did anaesthetics I knew my patient back to front and inside out prior to meeting them .. it gave me an insight to them rather than operative sight or condition.. Back then I could and had to bring a lot of people down of the ceiling as they were terrified ....so even the slightest bit of pyjama paralysis has to be recognised... patients are human and had to be treated as such ...communication was and still should be key ...Paperwork was minimal ....now its flow charts and duplication of every words ....(one of the reasons I retired early)

Rather patronising comment from the nurse. Your the patient and I'm the nurse. Very annoying. Presumably saying she knows best! Once you have retired you can loose your identity so easily, and if she had known you and your background she would not have said that, but she shouldnt say it to anyone whatever their background.. A person with a chronic illness knows their condition and body very well, much better than a new nurse who hasnt had time to read your notes. One point in her favour though is she is a questioning person which is always a good thing. You sound like you are doing brilliantly well so that is great 😄 all the best Sally
Exactly that shouldn't be saying it to anyone....Her questions came from the computer sadly with all this pc tablet etc it's a world where nobody can think for themselves as its all written down in performance criteria that must be adhered to ...

most people make an effort to tidy themselves up a bit for a medical appointment. A nurse ought to know better that, just because someone looks smart or looks well, doesn’t mean they’re suddenly in good health 🙄 If only!
That was the start of it the Pain Score Charts .....I have seen some people laying quiet and in agony but don't say anything cause they were expecting pain ... so because they are quiet dosent mean they are comfortable ask them ...
Then you get those that scream and shout and the pain is off the scale...when in fact they are fine ...

I agree 100%. Since covid and with gp mutilple retired I dont see the same Gp. I am tired of havind to go over things so much more than before. Your replies are excellent. I have taken some notes as might help for me on times. Struugling atm so excuse my spelling. tknak you for post xx
Hi,I lost a lung due to cancer and developed COPD on my remaining lung, Breathing is not my best friend as you can see. Some days I struggle to go more than 10 meters and more than once I think I'm going to leave the earth.
But you wouldn't see that on me. If it wasn't that I was constantly on oxygen people and nurses would also be confused.
But sometimes the package doesn't tell what's inside.
They can't blame COPD suffering people to keep clear from infection and flair ups. It mean they be careful.

I loved Yr post Blackbird8.a tick-box exercise with an inexperienced nurse "who knows best".she's a lot to learn.the problem is with some,they aren't open to the fact.she'd have been better asking how do u cope so well & keep so well, which wld have given her some insight into you,& advice for others.head up the backside springs to mind )) xxx
I do too.yes it is & being open to learning from patients+ interested enough.too many staff don't read even the briefest outline of notes - so they miss the 1st step .. i love yr responses ,))xx

Aw that's so awful they all do it they take one look at you like they know you better then you know yourself when they literally just met you and start judging you that's how I ended up having another asthma attack all could of been avoided. So sorry you had to go through that! ❤️
Oh my god that's terrible you had an athsma attack in what appears to have been a totally avoidable situation...It's all about treating the person with the condition not just the condition 😌
Yeah I hadn't been feeling well for months went to my GP like 20 times and eventually I got in touch with asthma helpline and sure enough I was right something was seriously wrong and early hours of last Friday had an asthma attack 💔. Luckily I went to the hospital because at the time I didn't realise that's what it was who knows if I had listend to my GP probably wouldn't be here right now. The worst part is being told your chest sounds and looks clear on Xrays yet your wheezing, breathless, exhausted tight chested and can hardly stand up and talking is exhausting! I really feel for you though cause you know your own body and then they talk to you like your an idiot!!! 💔😞

Grr! to that nurse. I hope, but don't really expect, that she will learn from this encounter. I'm glad you were able to tell her some home truths, though you really should not have needed to. I hope you're having some nice soothing walks with lots of happy dogs, who no doubt will appreciate the extra lippy. 😍😍😍 xxxx
I'm hoping something went in to her head...No walks today Sadie was walked this morning with my hubby and I stay in bed on a Saturday morning and rest ... I will take Sadie out later for some training and a mooch around the pond ....
I'm waiting in for AO .COM to collect a fridge freezer that broke down a few weeks back sadly as it was a large one with plenty of room for the online shop and Sadies meat 🍖 😅

Iam appalled by this nurse. Totally unprofessional to speak to a patient like that. I wouldn’t dare question somebody’s diagnosis from a doctor or judge someone how their disability affects them. Is she with you 24/7. She obviously has no compassion when seeing patients. Iam glad you stood up to her. Copd and other lung diseases, affect everybody differently, it’s not a one sock fits all scenario. You keep doing whatever makes you feel better blackbird 8 💜❤️💜
That's the thing with COPD or lung conditions nobody's the same so totally agree with you ...I was quite taken aback by her but then after venting and thinking on it I guess she's just a bit young and nieve in herself she certainly will have some knocks on her journey if she is going to continue in that manner....but that's her life choice and today's educational ways I suppose...
You seem to have a very positive outlook on life with the beautiful photos you post from the lovely part of our country that you live in. I wonder if that’s what helps you look and feel so well. I know if I get bogged down too much with my health issues it just seems that I get worse, but if I can make myself get up and get on, it can improve my whole outlook on life and then that seems to have a better effect on my health. Of course this isn’t always true and there are many days when we simply can’t do anything except try to get through the day and hope things begin to improve again. I have learned to really enjoy the good spells of feeling well and try to accept the difficult days. Wishing you all many good days.
I never have been one to stay too long in the doldrums of life ...It's possible living here has helped me immensely with the area I'm in ... I'm still blown away daily at things I see .
I hope the young lady has a rewarding career just as I did ... I still can never remember being rude to a patient in my 35 years and any of my students I had for teaching were taught first and foremost how to communicate and have manners ...
Funny enough I've had similar the past. I have IPF but do not have the most common symptoms , coughing most of the day, andclub fingers. I rarely cough. A registrar told me once I just had asthma with a chest infection, he could hear crackles at base of lungs. I laughed at him and said, have you seen my ct scan showing IPF and crackles in lungs are the symptoms of IPF and not an infection, I do not need antibiotics. The next time I went to the hospital, I refused to see him and saw consultant who was confused by what the registrar said and apologised profusely to me. I need to start wearing makeup 🤣🤣
hope you feel better for getting it off yr chest. She’s a disgrace to yr gp practice and nursing profession. Hope you don’t have to encounter her again. She should have been full of praise for you for keeping so well and active with yr lung condition and praising the prescriber who has got yr medication and management just right with you. I have a special 'look over the top of my specs' that I reserve for medics that haven't read my (admittedly pretty long & complicated) notes before I see them! It conveys the word "REALLY??!" without me saying it. I was brought up in a house where my Dad was a doc & my mum a nurse. I keep educated and do my research on my medical conditions. It is frustrating beyond human patience sometimes when you meet with medics who don't seem to have done their homework!
Loved your post and can totally relate. Lost count of the number of times I’ve been told by drs/nurses “but you look great”. Was seriously anaemic once, lost equivalent to 7 pints of blood. GP said last time she’d seen anyone like that, they were in hospital, “ but look at you, you look great !” Overheard nurse in A&E discussing me on phone to consultant re afib/tachycardia “ but she looks great “. Like you, I tend to just keep going through everything, have a high pain threshold, never lose my appetite no matter what , so I suppose it’s a compliment really !
I'm over it now I'm not often offended by anyone so have no idea why her words niggled at me ...I just think due to my past career I don't think I ever addressed a patient like that ...
hi, well done you loved the post, I am waiting for my COPD review. Last year it was a phone call lasting less than 10 minutes when I checked my records online I got a score of 6/40 , when I did my own test it was 18/40 and told them what I had done and they changed my records. Turned out she only asked a few questions and forgot to turn the page. But I remember when I was diagnosed in 2017 the oncologist told me I have 3-4 holes in the top of my lungs and it’s emphysema (COPD) , one year later gp told me I didn’t have COPD until I reminded him who diagnosed me. I'm glad you mentioned how you feel on a bad day. It makes me realise that despite doing our best and being loaded with medication, in my case for heart failure as well as COPD, we cannot expect to feel in perfect health any more.
I couldn't help it had to say something at the time ...I never do my best with how I look maybe I should change that but I find my dogs I walk don't judge like humans do ...they love you no matter ...so in my wellies and shorts I stay with no lippy 😂
Glad you felt the need to get it off your chest BB it was a good read and can relate to your reaction over what the nurse said. Some nurses just don't get it that you can look well but be unwell. I feel that we have become too americanised in the form filling business in all areas in the UK. We know our own bodies best . Good for you putting on a little tutty , it all helps to make us feel better x
Much better days that's for sure. When I was young we had a family doctor that knew each and every one of us, maybe its my age but things seem to run better then. Even down to having a matron running the wards . Progress isnt always beneficial . Take care x
Same as our family doctor knew everyone by name popped by a cup of tea when passing...The matrons were amazing people ruled the wards with iron rods and infection rates were very low as everything was so clean..
Patients were inspected before visiting times ... 😂
All this without a spirometry test! Unbelievable. As you well know nurses are not there to diagnose and that one could be dangerous to somebody just with her unprofessional, totally wrong comments?
Personally now I’m at a certain age I get really offended how some young people talk to me and certainly would not expect it from a nurse/ medic etc. I would certainly be mentioning that to my GP if just to save someone else relying on her information. Hope you are well. Christi
Sorry to hear about your negative experience and the cursory assessment by the nurse. It is simply negligence. I fear that it is only going to get worse because of government policy to upgrade nurses to become pretend doctors . This group of "Noctors" will continue to erode NHS standards and is an attempt to provide cheaper services. I heard an interesting saying from a junior doctor. They are saying "CCT and flee". Meaning- Certificate of Completion of Training and flee to another country. I am disheartened but encouraged by the tenacity of doctors to provide a good service in the face of eroding standards. I would certainly consider emigrating to another role and country today if I was where I was 40 years ago ...I was going to Canada at one point but my children didn't want to move... so I stayed and made my career in the large teaching hospital in Hampshire...

Ohh I know as I was preaching at her my mouth was moving and my head was saying ....shut up ....Needless to say I didn't shut up .. I can't remember any infections for years ... I remember being unwell a few months back and I was rough 😔....but it wasn't an antibiotic or steroid combo needed.....

Sometimes it has to be said for your own sanity. I can remember snapping at a junior doctor who said something ridiculous when I was an impatient. I’m keeping well and trying not to behave. Pleased to hear you’re doing okay. Could do with some dryer weather ☀️ not too hot though.

I’m sure your lifestyle is keeping you looking fit for someone at stage 4 COPD. However I’m sure the nurse shouldn’t be questioning whether you have it.
I was in a car shunt and acquired a bad back and after months of physio I remember the doctor who was assessing me saying I was putting it on as I could touch my toes. The fact l found it hard to lean back didn’t seem to matter. I still suffer with my back now many years later and I can still touch my toes ! Hi BB. This is awful . I do understand how you feel. I had a Rhuematologist question whether I actually have Rhuematoid arthritis. Yes, the Rhuematoid arthritis that gave me lung disease and lead up to me having a transplant, because I look so well and don't have significant joint pain. The irony is I was diagnosed at his hospital in the consultation room next door and the diagnosis confirmed by two other doctors. 😕It was awfully confusing and crushing to hear this from a professional. I felt like a fraud until I regained my composure. So I can well imagine your frustration and I can't blame you one bit! I don't know if this nurse knows you are a dog walker, you walk a lot and that definitely helps your lung function and overall health, although it cannot take away from the fact you have stage 4 COPD.

You are a strange one. You are rated you say a stage 4 COPD; as am I. I am 80. My last FEV1 test was 28 and after my last hospital visit they put me on end of life care. I ignored that you can guess!
Given how you appear to present I am not at all surprised that the nurse queried your diagnosis.
So no asthma. Good.
Sedentary stats 97 - extraordinary if stage 4 COPD. 88-92 is the accepted range. I am on 24x7 oxygen and can get to 95% if I really work at it and use at least 4 litres augmentation per minute! (I am prescribed at 2.5 with brief maximum 4 if needed)
I assume you do no have emphysema, although a full diagnosis is not possible without extensive pathology; I had a lung biopsy which confirmed it.
Ditto bronchiectasis which i was diagnosed with at the same time.
I have the same emergency pack as you do and end up using it twice a year at least; and this year involved two 999 visits to the A&E.
So while I do not wish you any ill at all I would urge you to get your clinicians to take a longer, harder look at your symptoms and go for a much more robust diagnosis.. You sound like you at a very early stage and should be treated as such.
I would urge that if this is so lots of exercise, a very good and well controlled diet; the right and not too much medication and a very regular check up by COPD experts and NOT just your GP.
I was identified 22 years ago, confirmed 16 and have been under attentive treatment since. I reckon I have a bit more left in me!
I'm 68 and I work as a self employed dog walker... I walk 12 km daily ...I choose not to smoke on the day of my diagnosis with COPD stage 4 ... my lung function was 37 % ..
I have had all the tests all the bloods taken and since all the tests confirmed it .As a retired theatre nurse I knew I had it prior ...
I ignored I had it for some years so it's my doing for continuing to smoke until I decided enough was enough and went through the correct channels to get the treatment I needed ....
Having a career as a nurse in theatres gave me a jumping board to all the clinical staff I needed to see and still do to this day leading Respiratory Consultants surgeons anaesthetists so it's nothing to do with my GP although if I need a referral I do go via the surgery and inform them ...
I'm still very much in contact with consultants who I can call and ask to see them if I need to ...
I don't think I could have had a much more robust diagnosis...Do you ?
I'm fully aware of dietary requirements and have no need for advice on it thankyou ...
So the nurse as I explained was very young and lacking in manner and made the mistake of contradicting all of the above knowledge ....people in the medical profession should never assume anything ....as I said to her.. look at me ...not through me ....

My use of strange rattled you - sorry. I meant only unusual, different. You see 47% FEV1 is not stage 4 COPD. And with all you know I am sure I need not tell you that. Have you any COPD expertise support? After all you are an expert in your field so seeking expertise ikn this field would seem to make sense.
I am assuming you have given up smoking. By the way I gave up smoking on Jul 23rd 1993 which is 31 years ago. Apparently I was ten years too late! But anyway there is a very strong genetic marker on my mother's side and my entire family were nicotine addicts!
Don’t get me started on them not reading the notes……I went for a spirometry test. She asked me why I was there, I told her I was there for the spirometry test. Oh, she didn’t know that, didn’t know where the spirometer was, eventually found it then told me she didn’t know how to work it. I’m another ex nurse but was NOT going to show her how. She then asked again why I was there. I asked if she’d read my notes, no she didn’t have time to do that. I asked what time she started on duty and asked what time she actually got in. Half an hour before her stint began. I queried why she didn’t look at her patients’ notes for the day. Oh, she doesn’t have time to do that, by the time she’s got a coffe and had a chat with all the other staff…… I wasn’t impressed. I to,d her I volunteer as a complementary therapist in our local hospice and make sure I’ve read through all the notes for my patients for my day, a full day I might add…. I did actually lodge a complaint but it didn’t go anywhere 😡
What an unprofessional thing to say to you about 'I'm the nurse' ! If she really wanted to question your diagnosis, she should have reviewed your notes ahead of time and prepared some pertinent questions, not gone on how you look. That's like telling someone with depression that you saw them smile yesterday! What a goober!

Can’t believe the attitude of the nurse and sorry to hear you were treated so insensitively…..but I can’t help but think there’s something going on with respiratory consultations at the moment. I was diagnosed with Asthma COPD overlap last year, there is a strong history of COPD in my family and unfortunately I smoked for 17 years of my life. I was diagnosed via spirometry and was hospitalised for a short time 2 months ago with respiratory illness……while in hospital I was asked by a nurse what made me think I had ACOS…I said because that’s what I was diagnosed as my Asthma nurse. She then replied well I think you have just asthma…..no tests were carried out while I was in hospital ….very strange. I am being referred for further tests but I find it strange that it was just assumed that I have only asthma without having tests. They did discover inflammation and scarring on my lung on CT scan so I’ll be having a follow up scan in few months….but it’s all been very confusing. I’m glad you’ve written this post, it’s great. I think as young as my practice nurse was she will learn through time and education to learn about people and not just patients ...

Someone that I hadn't seen for a couple of years came up to me today and told me how well I looked. My oxygen saturation this morning was down to 75%. I had an exacerbation last week and nearly died. My spirometry test 2 weeks ago said my lung function is 35% of that expected of a 74 year old. I feel rubbish but she insisted that she was pleased to see me looking so well!
You know your own body Blackbird. It reminds me of the baby books, babies should sleep in between feeds, ha ha.
I think your nurse has read the lung function book, but has not realised it’s only a guideline, not set in stone, as each person is different, with different symptom's/levels of the same disease. Perhaps in hind sight she learned something herself.

And I just have to say that if you still walk your dogs,then, your COPD cannot be as bad as you think ! I would give anything to be able to do that with ours. I do not have exacerbations either so medication becomes out of date same as your's,this I put down to the Amoxicillin I take twice a day and have done for at least 10 yrs if not more..But walking restricted to either up or down stairs,out to the car or from car to bar !! 🤣😂😂🤣😘😘😄
To be honest after my last spell in hospital both doctors and nurses should read patients notes before seeing them. I found it very tiring having to explain all my conditions, who diagnosed me, why I am on this medication etc etc etc.

Yes, you make an effort to get to an appointment, and give yourself enough time to not be out of breath or tired and yes, sometimes, all the staff see is someone who is externally, at that moment in time, looking well.
Had the same experience recently at the hospital. The doctor noted how fit I seemed as I didn't need any help getting onto the couch (which was much lower than the one at my GP's surgery) and had made an effort not to tire myself out and had taken the necessary medication before going out! (On PIP, have a blue badge etc.) Wow who knew? 🤣🤣
ps the doctor did say he didn't have my notes as the notes are all archived elsewhere not on site, and the computer only recorded events from 2019. I'd taken a cancellation appointment and had only taken a copy of my last two operations not whole medical history. He didn't know I'd had major surgery (abdominal) nor any of the other health issues.
That's so bad ... it seems to be the normal thing now not to look at patients notes and their medical history is so important...When I worked for the NHS all staff were very stringent on finding medical history of all patients...
The pressure of paperwork now would take the absolute joy of the job away for me ...

Waited five months to get to see the respiratory team. They’re now arranging scans ( in their time) bloods tomorrow and spirometer when they can get one! Shocking but I wonder

I don’t think the spirometer test will be anytime soon but at least they’ve arranged bloods tomorrow- I’ve just gone under the radar for years and because I did clinical trials I got a lot of help with meds etc
