Hi everyone i just recently developed a problem with my breathing as if im struggling to breathe i know i can breathe but the thing is im always feeling like im breathing shallow. I cant seem to stop focusing on my breathing and i find that when im distracted i am not having this issue. Sometimes at night i feel like when im about to dose off i quikly wake up again thinking i stopped breathing and it feels as if i did. What can i do im constantly thinking about my breathing which makes things worse but i just cant seem to let go, im an anxiety sufferer and i do have little panic attacks. Thank you

Feel like im struggling to breath?
Hi
I have had this problem & still do from time to time & it is anxiety even though I no it feels frightening , especially the one where you wake up in the night feeling you have stopped breathing , that one frightened me so much i ended up leaving the light on !
You have said when your mind is of it you are ok , but when you think about it then it starts
When it does try to take deep breaths & let it out slowly , it takes some doing but with practice
will help
Also tell yourself this is anxiety , nothing serious as the more you see it for what it is the less power it will have over you
Have you been to see your GP ? i dont no if you would want to take meds but there are other things they can do to help you as well
Be assured you are not on your own with this & slowly this will get better
Keep posting how you feel it helps

Thank you for telling me
Hi Ahmed,
It's called hyperventilating and it is a really common symptom of anxiety. However being common doesn't make it any easier to deal with; even when I think my anxiety is under control I can suddenly find myself having to take a huge breath to try and get some oxygen. As WhyWhy said breathing exercises will help. There are some good posts on here that contain good instructions or you could google them.
It's much worse when it happens at night. I used to get that all the time. You're nearly asleep and then WHOOSH, you're shooting up in bed, gasping for air. It happens a lot less now but when it does I can usually calm myself with my breathing exercises.
It will pass but I would go and see your GP. There is a lot of help out there.
Best Wishes,
Lizard.
U know I'm so glad to see this post and the comments, even thou I wished none of us suffered it. I woke up to this last night, and it filled me with panic I was lieing in bed then crying. Then i was saying naughty anxiety. I've been doing so well lately to. Xxx
